Advice on my 4003 travel mate.

Later NIN records inspired me to create music and I love all the bass parts that are on all those records. you play on almost all of my favorite records ha. (Im done fangirling now..)

I tour with a 4003 that I love but engineers tend to hate it. I want get another workhorse like my rickenbacker that can tour with me but I'm not sure what I want to get. Im not all that seasoned when it comes to tone.I recently saw a video of Atticus Ross using a jaguar with the jazz style pick ups on the first HTDA . I loved the tone. What are your thoughts on the bass and on the different variations of that bass bc there quite a few. Any words of warning/wisdom any basses you and Trent Reznor kept visiting on those NIN records.

The Japanese made non-Squire Jaguar model (the one that goes for around $800) is THE BOMB. It's basically a Jazz bass with a switch that puts the pickups in series and makes it sound like the world is ending. I couldn't do without mine at this point. JMJ's black NIN Jaguars were those stock, I believe. They other grey/green one was a Custom Shop guy that is described somewhere else in the forum I think. Pretty sure AR is playing a stock Jaguar in the HTDA video I saw, and Eric Avery had a Jaguar on tour with Garbage too.

If you need a workhorse staple, why not look at a Precision? My philosophy at least is "if you can't get great tone from a P-Bass, you're doing it wrong!!"

The engineer and producer on our last record were veterans and have made a lot of huge records refused to track it haha. My precision is too dark. I really want something a bit quirky. I guess I need to just go play some bc I think my P-Bass is a bit of an odd ball because there is no situation I would use it over my Rick.

They may be veterans but them being any good is debatable. A lot of good music had been recorded with a rick.

So what DID they have you track with?

Why not try some different pickups in that P? You could drastically change/improve the sound I bet, and it's lots cheaper than a new bass! That is if you like how it feels, aside from the sound. Different pickups could fix it.
Then go get something quirky too. A P, a Rick, and a quirky hollowbody/shortscale/etc--with that trio you'd be ready for anything.

True but he did Mix/Produce Pearl Jam Ten, A Bowie record, and a U2 record...
so some credit is do I suppose...

I ended up using some G&L stuff and a vintage Jazz mostly.
Our manager has quite a collection... next record I want to own my tone...and not barrow someone else's. haha

Beck FOH has never given me any trouble either with my 4003. Hmmm...what's the issue? Get your engineer to be more specific.

Trent/NIN always goes for his P-Bass Lyte (active P/J) and his newer American Deluxe P. Ever since I brought Jaguar basses into the fold, he and Atticus seemed to have been down for that too.

FOH never seems to mind my 4003 except for it being a bit noisy sometimes. just these particular engineers disliked it in the studio. That G&L always seemed to do the trick for them, said it had more detail. Next time I'm gonna be a little more pushy with my tone.

Which G&L was it? Just curious. I like some G&Ls but any one I can think of is worlds apart from a Rick! But with a producer of that caliber I would certainly defer to their judgement. Last time I tracked with anyone in that league I brought in 6 very different basses, planning to use at least 4 of them for different kinds of songs, but the producer ended up liking my jazz for the whole record, from rockers to ballads (and, he was right:)

Well, it doesn't sound like you're going to be able to do that with those engineers.

If they can't record a 4003, I'd be wonderin' about their skills, I don't care what recording credentials they have.

Just sounds really odd to me. :hmm:
