Advice on Rig, For Pub Rock Gigs.

Hey guys. Need to get some opinions on a good Amp Cab Setup for pub gigs. Im playing in my first proper gigging band on bass, we are still in rehersal stage and plan to be gigging in early october once we have built up a decent set list. Bass I mostly use is a 74-75 Ibanez tele bass. Songs range from 60/70's classic Rock, some 80's stuff, A few current tracks, several orginal blues/rock numbers and some classic Aussie Pub Rock. I have been doing my research on amps and due to the wide variety of options am getting very confused with it, Plan to buy a rig in the next few weeks so I can start mucking around and developing my sound, currently rehearsing in garage studio with a 150 watt laney HCM combo. Basically most of the gigs we will be doing will be smaller pub venues/parties etc. Just want to get some feedback from some of you established players on what you are using/have used. Several Options Im considering.

1. Mark Bass Little Mark 2 or 3, with 4x10 cab. -New

2. David Eden WT 550 with 4x10 cab.-New

3. Peavey Nitro 450 watt head with 15" JBL cab.- Used.

All feedback, advice would be much appreciated.

Nick.

Thanks for tips so far, I have tomorrow off work and will be taking a trip into the city with a freind to the annandale strip where there is several good music and guitar shops on the one strip. Plan too play through as many different amps as possible which sould help me decide, thanks for the thread list Stumbo, damn thats a lot of reading but some very helpful.

In my opinion, as someone who's played Aussie Pub Rock for 30 years, I'd go for 1 or 2. For most gigs I use a MarkBass SA450 into a custom made box with a Black Widow 15 (custom made sounds so much better than "knocked together by a buddy with cabinetry skills"). For larger gigs I'll use a Warwick 411 Pro and smaller gigs an Eden D210XLT, both with the same head.

That's only 'coz I'm not familiar with the Peavey. But any quality amp/box rig of around 400 watts or more will do the job fine. I'd tend more toward a 4x10 quad box if I only had one cab.

Yep, I'd go for number one having played Aussie and Kiwi pubs. Give George a call at Bass Gear Direct in Sydney and he will fix you up with a decent Bergantino cab for it - the general recommendation on this forum is the AE 410. Note also that Bergantino prices have recently dropped in Aussie with the strengthening Aussie dollar. I believe George also gives a fortnight money back trial in Oz, during which time you can return it if not happy - I doubt if anyone ever has. I can recommend him as a top man to deal with.

Another vote for # 1.
Especially if you get a 410 Neo cab. I'm using a LMll with a GK Neo410 right now for larger clubs and I really dig the tone and easy load in/out. It's the best rig I've had so far in many years of playing club gigs.

+ 1 on getting a bergantino cab. I got an HS410 from george and its an amazing cab. Sounds fantastic with the wt550.

+1 for #1.

I've been gigging professionally for 11 years, and without the luxury of a roadie!! Aside from the Markbass heads sounding great IMO, it just makes sense to get the smallest and lightest gear possible if you plan on doing this several nights a week for the next however many years.

My main rig - that has yet to be not enough for volume - is a Markbass F500 and 2 Epifani UL 112 cabs. In other words a 500watt head into a 600watt speaker load at 4ohms.

Thanks Guys, your input has been very helpful. Will be off shortly too go and test a few out in the city, will let you know on the results, just want to weigh up my options do some research and try a few different rigs before i jump in and buy, which tended to be a problem for me in the past.

+ 1 I'm a bit late to this thread but as a recently satisfied customer of George and a Bergantino convert, if you are in the market at the Markbass cabinet price you have to check out the Bergantino cabinets. I think I saw George is now selling the AE410 for just over $1600 and the HS410 for even less. I own both Bergs and a Markbass CL104 cabinet which in its own right is a good cabinet but at that price for me there is no comparison frankly. It's the Bergantinos (I use 2 x ae210s) every day of the week for my loud rock gigs now. Many swear by the LM/Berg set up (though I gig a GK head). My suggestion is try everything else. And then go see George!

I have heeded your advice about the bergantinos and have been in contact with george today via email, he has a shipment of AE410's coming in a couple of weeks so and will be contacting me when they come in so I can try one out for sure, today I played through a Little Mark 3 and a Eden WT550 both through a Mark 4x10 cab. was very impressed with the both of them. I have a guy who is selling a WT550 through ebay and we are trying too work out a deal, he wants one of my old guitar amps I no longer use plus some cash for the head, hopefully I can work it out with him and get that, combined with the Berg cab should be a good rig for me. Thanks everyone for your input .
