Advice wanted: the greatest ABG ever

Hey bass pros and enthusiasts,

Christmas is around the corner and I'm getting my boyfriend an acoustic bass this year. [I know he really wants one]
Which one should I go for? Which one would you get if you could choose anything? [ignoring the budget for now] I'm looking for something impressive, with a little "umph".

But it comes down to this- ABG don't work if you mean real bass authority in a real acoustic situation with real acoustic guitar players.

There are only three that do the job at all well, and none are currently in production. Those are the Ernie Ball Earthwood, the Tacoma Thunderchief, and the big Guild B-50.

I've never heard of someone being unhappy with an Ibanez AEB10. That seems to be the go-to ABG 'round these parts. Like the guy above said, not many ABG's have any real bass presence, but there are still some nice ones to be had. The Ibanez is a fine start, and relatively cheap, but then you have some Deans and higher-end Ibanez's that are rather pretty with fancy tops and whatnot, for little more coin. Boulder Creek is another brand I've heard good things about, though they run around $800. Do a search on ebay, there's typically a very wide selection of them there, at least wider than you'd find at any shop.

Have the aeb10. Even though you'd have to play your fingers off to match volumes with acoustic sixers this is still a decent piece of equip if your looking to practice alone without an amp. Or just strumming some solo chords, IMO its is great for arranging if you compose w bass you are able to cover both the lows and highs because of how well it sounds while playing chords. Also sounds real good plugged in the fishman eq gives a good amount of tone shaping ability and is very capable of going..................

Low when amplified. Great budget abg wouldn't get rid of mine for anything.

I have a Breedlove Atlas Series Studio Bj350/Sm4 Acoustic-Electric Bass Guitar that I use professionally in a recording & touring acoustic roots/folk band. I love it. It holds its own unamplified (though you do need to thrash it with a pick), and it sounds crazy good when lightly amplified (I use a 50W Ampeg BA112). Street price is around $800.

There are better sounding ABG's out there, but you will pay a LOT of money for them.

I have a cheapie Dean EAB I picked about a week ago and thus far I am thrilled with it. It has suited exactly the purpose I wanted, which was the ability to practice without an amp and to play with a friend on an acoustic guitar.
The Dean was under $150 and was louder and easier to play than most of the $500 acoustic basses I tried.
