Advice wanted: the greatest ABG ever

That's because those of us who often depend on our ABG don't buy them! For some reason some (many?) people think they should spend $2000 on an electric bass guitar but can get away with $300 on an ABG. Go figure ...

I play a Tacoma Thunderchief CB10E ... great guitar. My next will be the Martin 00-16BTE. Neither are crazy expensive, but both are very well built of solid woods (not laminated), have good pickups and preamps, are relatively loud in an acoustic setting (but no ABG is "loud enough"), and sound great (very upright-ish) when plugged in. Another great guitar is the Guild B50, but many players don't like their HUGE size (very, very deep body).

The Tacoma is out of production, but they pop up here and there. The Martin is a current production model.

OK, now lets talk budget?
Finding a $7,000.00 Ribbecke Halfling under the tree would be very impressive, but unrealistic for many of us.

Dean "Stylist B1". Full acoustic, two pickups 32" axe. Arched top. I customised mine with two Magnetics pickups. See if you can find one used.

TBH there are a lot of great bass players getting away with $300 electric basses as well as ABG. Those Ibanez sell well for reasons other than price.

I agree. I would use an ABG for sitting around at home. For that, a cheaper model is fine.

However, many new inexpensive electrics are built really well, nowadays since the wide use of CNC. I imagine this technology is also used on inexpensive ABG's.

opinions are like the nose: everyone has one, uh? :)

In addition, if you listen to what Mike Rutherford says (I've read this somewhere years ago!) very often they end up bringing on tour unexpensive guitars to avoid damages to the most precious axes, that are left at home; so in the end the instruments that get a better sound with the passing time are the ones that are played and played daily. Often price does not match quality.

There are only three that do the job at all well, and none are currently in production. Those are the Ernie Ball Earthwood, the Tacoma Thunderchief, and the big Guild B-50.
