AERO PICKUPS - Religious Tone Experience

Maybe slightly off topic but wondering if anyone can tell me what strings pair well with their Aero J’s.
I’m planning on a restring during installation so open to suggestions!
Hm. Definitely an 'it depends' answer. Whatever the character of the strings is, the aeros will bring it out crystal clear.

Why not start with the strings you're used to so you can really hear and contrast the aeros with what you had before?

Seems like after that you'll know what you want more or less of and you'll have a benchmark to guide you to your next set of strings, right?

I don't know that this will in any way be what you like, but I've really enjoyed the aeros with plain old xl chrome daddario flats. I know. Bo-ring...

What tlite said^^

Larry put it to me like this. "What your bass sounds like when you play it unplugged is how it is going to sound with Aero pickups."

Every bass is different and the way you play it is what makes it sound like you. I'd say string it with your favorites.

@cataract I agree with the sentiment of @tlite & @ElGoodo ....really depends, and the sound of the instrument acoustically is a HUGE factor. This being said I generally go TIs for flats and DR Sunbeams for rounds. I’ve been meaning to write up a thread on the DRs...they’re so well made, last forever and even their packaging demonstrated attention to detail. Again, it depends...whatever you like.

Thanks for the input (you & everyone else!)
I’ve been in a string testing mode even without the Aeros but now that they’ve arrived I’m definitely going to give the Sunbeams a try. I’ve never played on DR strings so, why not? Will post updates.

Groovy. Looking forward to the updates!
Ordered some Sunbeam “Lites” and plan on assembling as soon as they arrive. The Aeros look snazzy!

I ordered a new set of branded covers direct from Larry. They’re on their way Priority Mail from Hawaii. STOKED

The Aero branded covers arrived straight from the source the other day— installation is complete and HOLY SMOKES what a great sounding set of pickups.
I can’t wrap my head around it. I know night & day is the usual saying but this tonal change was unexpected and seems completely UNREAL.
I need to buy some Aero Precision pickups ASAP. This OK sounding Jazz bass suddenly became one of the best sounding basses I’ve ever played in my life. Can’t believe it’s just a “beater” lol

I’ve been buying pickups from Larry since 2008. The only pickups for my Basses. Last year was the year I bought the single pole magnets. Just when i thought i loved my bass sound. I’m completely blown away by these. Try a set when you can. Highly recommended. Tell Larry Ron from NJ said to try them!!!!

As @nalapit13 noted, he’ll make you anything you need. Here are a couple of hyperlinks and the specs to some of the 5 string Jazz options. @bassclef04

AERO Instrument - "Designs for Better Instruments"

Aero Pickups
  • J Bass 5 Type 1 (Std) pickups are the 5 string version of Aero´s J Bass 4 Type 1 pickup. These pickups come standard with exposed pole pieces, and can optionally be closed cover (unexpoased pole pieces). String spacings are specified at the time of purchase. Five String basses generally use covers of the same dimension as the J Bass 4 bridge cover (94mmL). This cover will accomidate C-C string spacings upto 18.50mm. If a manufacturer has routed the neck position for a J Bass 4 neck cover (91mmL), this pickup is also available with string spacings for the neck cover upto 17.00mm C-C.
  • JB5ae - Aero version of the JB5 pickup. The bobbin is longer to allow wide string spacings beyond 18.50mm. The pickup is sold with or without cover. Black plastic Covers are available standard, or custom machined from wood. Cover dimensions are 4-5/8"L x 0.825"W x 7/8"H. Cover has two mounting holes, one at each end.
  • Type F - Replacement Pickup - These pickups are also voice like the J Bass 4 Type 1 pickup. The neck string spacing is 16.75mm C-C, and the cover is 3.95"L. The bridge string spacing is 17.60mm C-C, and the cover is 4.10"L. The replacement pickup is designed to fit into the existing cover. New covers are not available through Aero.
Note: 1) All J Bass 5 pickup sets (neck & bridge) come reverse wound, reverse polarity, for hum cancelling when both pickups are active. 2) String spacing is specified at time of order. 3) All pickups ordered with covers come with exposed pole pieces unless closed cover is specified.

I’m getting my first set of ESS pickups from Larry very soon. I’m super stoked to try them out. Here’s a shot of the bass they’re in.

Nice!!
I've been using a Type 4A P pickup for about 10 years. I chose that design to make the response a little closer to the single coil type.
In the past, I've had Aeros in a Musicmaster and a J. Total "search over" both times - at least for the pickup!
I'd love to try a 4A set [with one pole under each string] in a J-bass, eventually.
So many projects, so little time...
