AERO PICKUPS - Religious Tone Experience

I recently ordered some Aero Type 1 J-bass pickups for my Sandberg TT-5 Superlight, whose stock pickups didn't provide great string-to-string balance. Specifically, the A string was very weak relative to the others, even with a 14" radius fretboard. These pickups are sized like four-string pickups, approximately 91mm and 95mm, and Aero seemed like the best option for five-string J pickups in this size.

I wanted some radius to the poles, but Larry thought my OEM pickups were probably defective, and that raised poles would cause more balance problems than they would solve. I thought he was probably right, but I can't stand a weak A string, so we settled on raising just the A string poles by 0.5mm. This seemed right to me, especially because I achieved excellent balance on my G&L M-2500 by raising the A string poles a similar amount.

I finally played them at rehearsal last night, through two different rigs--Fender Rumble 500 combo and Eden head through SWR Triad cab. I cannot freaking believe the massive low end on these! The tone is simply huge compared to most J-bass pickups, but isn't muddy or boomy. Much clarity. Growl aplenty. I'm digging it. They have a little more noise than the OEM pickups, which Larry told me to expect, but it isn't bad.

As for the balance issue, the A string is definitely hotter, and balances better with the E, B, and G strings than it did before. It occasionally overpowers the D string, but I think that could be addressed through setup and/or strings. I like the A string to punch about as hard as the E, and now it does. In most passages and most places on the fretboard, I think the balance is about right.

So I'm very happy with them, but if I eventually decide the A is too hot, Larry will grind those poles down. I'm impressed with Larry's attention to detail and integrity, and he's a really interesting dude. I would definitely order from him again.

A couple years ago I stupidly let go of the best pickup I have owned an Aero JB4 Type 1 Jazz Set. I decided to put my Fender American Pro Jazz bass back to non active. I was going to order another set of the JB4 Type 1’s but After talking to Larry at Aero and asking a lot of questions I decided to jump for a set of Custom Aero PJ4 Type 1 L2 Pickups. He took the time to have me take measurements of my pickups and bridge to give me a set matched for my bass. He provides the best customer service I have ever seen. Anyway, looking forward to getting these whenever they ship.

One thing I forgot to mention is at the time 2 years ago I decided to put an Audere 4 band Preamp complete plate on my Fender Jazz. I needed a pickup that would have literally no hum and went for Aguilar Noiseless while decent they do not have the sweetness of the Aero’s. They seem to exibit great tones from lows to highs without all that mid range I cannot stand. At the time I regrettably sold my Aero JB-4 Type 1’s. It did not take me long to get dissatisfied with Audere’s tone. They used quality products and very nice construction but the tone was just “Flat sounding” to me. I replaced the preamp with a 2 band EMG BMT preamp that sounded better. Long story short, the EMG works sounds great in my Sire D5 50’s style telebass but on the Fender it is a bit over the top sounding so that is the reason I am putting it back to stock control but with a series/parallel switch and I wanted to go back to Aero pickups since I have everything paid off as I have not found a better pickup.

I have this ABass Pearl PJ arriving soon with Aero P and hum-cancelling J pickups!
Builder Albey Balgochian installed a bypass push/pull switch on the J pickup volume pot to remove it completely from the circuit for pure P tone.
He says a) he hears a difference between full bypass and J pickup volume turned off, and b) it's a cool way to preset a 2nd tone at the flick of a switch.
Very excited, will report in when comes...I've heard nothing but fantastic things about Aeros (and ABasses)!

After 1.5 months I received my Aero Noiseless Jazz pickups, installed them and played a bit. So far I really like them. I think I will be very happy! He made them to fit my particular bass (2017 Fender American Pro Jazz) That has a narrow neck width so the magnets line up with the strings. His idea and had me take measurements with digital caliper while on the phone. Larry is a very interesting person who genuinely cares.

I finally got a shot of my new Aeros in my old Fodera. Just in the case and not on the bandstand but it's better than nothing!

I've wired them volume-volume, no tone but have a tone circuit ready (with recommended 22µf cap) if the need arises. It sounds massive. Sustain for days on every single note. Couldn't be happier with Larry's suggestion to go fully passive.

Hello everyone, I’m a beginner bassist. A while ago, I planned to build my own bass, so I started looking for information. By chance, I came across this thread and became very interested in Aero pickups thanks to all of you.
Coincidentally, during a recent trip to Japan, I found a music store that had Aero pickups in stock, so I purchased the JB-1 and PE-1 sets. I apologize for not buying directly from the brand.

Now, I plan to build two basses based on these Aero pickups. However, after reading the introductions and going through all the posts in this thread again, I realized there are still many important details I need to understand. Because I’m not fluent in English, I’m unable to call Larry to ask these questions directly.

So I can only seek help from everyone here. I would really appreciate any advice you can give me. Thank you all!

  1. From the forum, I found an image titled “TK0018-0 Aero A5 Pickup Setup Height-page-001.jpg.” I’m not sure whether the JB-1 and PE-1 pickups I purchased should follow the same setup measurements shown in this image.
  2. If I’m not replacing pickups but designing a new J-bass around these pickups, is there a recommended pickup spacing?
  3. Are there any recommended wiring or circuit designs?
  4. Is it necessary to build an active circuit? (I saw some senior members discuss active vs. passive circuits, and many people’s basses shown in the thread seem to be passive.)
  5. If I’m building a bass using these two pickups, is there any recommended wood combination?
  6. Are there any other important things that I may have overlooked?

Thank you very much for your help! I truly appreciate it.
