Aerodyne Jazz Bass vs MIM Standard

I see a lot of comparisons between the Aerodyne J and a Fender P, but how does it hold up as a jazz bass? I'm looking into getting a new bass, and my decision right now seems to be between a used aerodyne J for 450$-500$ depending on haggling and a MIM J for 600$ new. I like a very punchy tone like Geddy Lee's, but I'm afraid given what's in my area a Geddy is out of my price range. Out of those two options, which is the better buy?

You can always order a used Geddy Lee for $599 from GC used. Costs $20 + tax to get it shipped to your door. This one's supposedly in excellent condition. You can always call the store and have them send you a picture and describe it over the phone to you. If you don't like it, return it for a refund at any GC store.

Why not get a non geddy Jazz? Mod it a bit if needed.

As someone who has both, I'll chime in!

Well, seeing as the Aerodyne is a Precision/Jazz config, it is it's own creature. Rather than saying it's "the best of both worlds", I'd say it's "a happy medium". It's likely to be beefier than a straight-up Jazz, but will have a bit more grit/grind/growl/etc. than a Precision.

1. If you're looking for a supreme amount of mid-range growl, the Jazz would probably serve you best, especially if you get a Geddy-sig or a Classic '70s Jazz. Both have the '70s bridge pickup placement which lends to a grittier sound.
2. If weight is a consideration, definitely go for the 'Dyne. The carved top and basswood body lend itself to a significantly lighter construction. For example, mine weighs in at 8lbs 6oz, even with the addition of a Hipshot Drop-D tuner.
3. What kind of fretboard radius do you prefer, if any? Flatter? Curvier? I ask, because the Aerodyne and the Classic '70s have a rounder, vintage-style fretboard.

Also, Max's advice about ordering from Guitar Center's used database is sound and accurate. I'm not certain if you have to pay sales tax when you're ordering from out-of-state, so be sure to ask them.

I've played an aerodyne for a few years now - plenty of punch if you play near the bridge jazz pup at max and the p pup at about 40%.
