Affinity Neck Surprise

Ya’ll have heard me brag about the AFN P Crafted In Indo, that I’ve modded the crap out of, and what a great bass it is. I can’t tell the difference between my neck, and the neck on a VM. So I ordered another AFN P neck (china), and was surprised at the difference. This one has the small tuners, no skunk stripe in the back, and smaller frets. It seems more like a toy. Now I see why some people trash the AFN model, especially if you get one this cheaply made.

I’m planning a fenderbird project, So my question is, is this neck worth fooling with or should I sell it and get an CII neck? The neck is in excellent shape for what it is, and maybe it will play fine. Does Anyone have some feedback/opinions about these?

Yeah those necks seriously suck. If it has the covered gear tuners those also really suck. Big time. If you can, get a neck from a vm p. I really don't like p necks, but I played one of those maple ones at gc and it was oh-so-nice. And the machines are pretty much mim grade. Same with the indo afn, which necks aren't terribly bad sometimes. Stay away from china unless it's a cv. Those ones from the 90's are a joke.

Just my opinion, if I was doing a Fenderbird project, the only authentic piece of the bass would be the Fender neck. The body would probably be hand-crafted or a modified cheap body, and all hardware/electronics aftermarket or surplus parts.

If your not using a Fender neck, is it really a Fenderbird?

Well what if it's a licensed fender replacement neck made by another company? Is that more of a fender than a squier? I'm gonna bet the op does not care since he already seems pretty happy with his first squier. Interesting take though.

danomite64, the only Squiers I've played are new ones, beside my modded CII AFN. They have all been nice.
I don't know if I like this neck because I've never played a crappy squier with a neck like this. So I'm looking for feedback.

Brendan5, Yeah it has the covered tuners. I was gonna replace those, but I'm wondering if this neck is worth fooling with.

I hadn't really thought about it like that, but I'd bet my CII neck is every bit as good as a MIM

Can't say the Chinese Affinity necks are bad - especially the year of the one that I own - 1998.

A little thinner clearcoat than my MIM on the headstock, but as straight and plays as well as it too. Nice Medium Jumbo frets and the big, open gear tuners are the same as the MIM I also own.

I almost bought the same type but it felt like crap - it was a used gc deal. As always they are hit or miss, but my best friend's 98 strat was a Lemmon and I believe this is right in the middle of the era where Squier got their reputation as extremely crappy. If there is nothing wrong with the one you've got now, I'd say maybe it's a gem, because if I am not mistaken those tuners would date it at least ten years old. That should be long enough for anything to happen if it's going to Afaik, ymmv, pb4ugo2bed...

Okay, I took ya'lls advice and sold the neck really cheap. But I still need a neck for my fenderbird project. I don't want to put too much $$$ in an epi bird iv, because, for one, the resale is awful, and two, bird parts are very expensive. I actually really like the electronics on this bird, but no matter how hard I try, I can't get use to the neck. I wonder if I change the neck, will that dramatically change the sound.

Mighty Mite necks are about $100.

I got a cheap DeArmond Bass for $50 on CL. It had
a great 22 fret neck. I mean it is outstanding! It is
also thinner than a jazz neck. Really easy for my
old hands,

I put it on a Affinity with Orig Fender 62 pup.

It's really cool. I gave it to my son,

I fixed the Pilot body electronics and put a
Samack neck on it and painted the neck
black,
