After much agonizing... NAD!

Yesterday while recording I noticed my keyboardist was using a Radial J+4 balanced signal driver in front of his. It made me think of your thread, anyways just thought I'd throw it out there.

Look into the EV ZXA1 when you're ready to add a sub. Much better sounding than the 212 K Sub IMO. Also more portable. Might consider this before the second K12.

This is a very cool thread, but I just have to snarkishly mention that a great ~$800 cabinet (K12 cost) without the built-in power/DSP is way more attractive to me, because I already have plenty of amplification options. I had to "settle" for a few 15/6/1 cabs and a 15sub—just cause I can, snark snark. ;)

My point, sans snark, is that I totally get the K12, and I have heard similar rigs I dig. But, if a bassist already has an amp head, the k12 is not an optimal solution. Also, since you have noticed that a single k12 is not quite enough "sometimes", I happen to know that a single 15/6/1 usually is, unless you are @BurningSkies haha! Wait, do they make an unpowered 15" version? :woot:

snark away, that's what family is for!

by the way, HAPPY MOTHER'S day.

don't forget to love your mother.

anyhoo... i was starting from scratch, no existing head, cab...

by the time i am done, the config will be a pretty fair PA two K12's and a KSub that i can break out for live bass
applications as needed.

this will be especially nice when i use it for solo guitar gigs. the GT-001 is a monster stereo unit that sounds pretty friggin' amazing through
this setup.

oh, and with the DEEP setting on the K12 selected and just a smidge of EQ from the GR-001, i can skitch by without the sub for rehearsals, etc...

I stumbled upon a used Mackie Thump 12 yesterday, when I was out shopping for a small bass amp. While I was testing the cab for PA use, I asked the store owner if I could plug in my passive Fender Jazz. This cabinet has a built in 1000 watt class D amp and a preamp that has three band EQ with sweepable mids. I was literally blown away. The cab tone is not bottom heavy, but it has ample bass, and it is the only amp I have ever played through that I didn't roll off the highs on my bass. I was playing the amp controls at noon, which I think Mackie calls flat, and as usual, my bridge pickup was set about 10% lower than the neck pup (measured by knob rotation). The tone control was at max clockwise rotation. Needless to say, I no longer have a need for a small bass amp, and when I need one, I have a nice stage monitor. The cab came with a nice form fitting carry bag with plenty of room for cables, tuners, etc., making for an easy one trip load in/out. It may not be for everyone, but I'm a happy camper. I may eventually buy an Ampeg SCR-DI to go with it, but at the moment, I'm not sure I need one.

I recently purchased two K12's for band use. I'm hoping they replace the JBL unpowered 515's we'd been mostly using for FOH for small to medium gigs when we provide PA (mostly vocal), and we've used them for monitors for a few gigs with the 515's. I was hoping that they could do similar SPL to the 515's (powered by my Peavey IPR at about 500w per cab) in a smaller footprint.

I'm currently 'feeling' these out in terms of what they can/can't do and their 'tonal sweet spot'. For monitors I run them with the 'vocal' setting. My singers found the flat setting was a little 'swampy' and boomy but after switching they LOVE them as monitors for vocals. The lows that were there were kind of indistinct. I've been running them at about 50% and they've been fine on a loud stage.

I'll know Thursday how they fare as front end at gig volume. I did sound for an acoustic gig a couple weeks ago and we ran 'lean' and had these up on stands and placed them left and right of the two performers (acoustic/acoustic guitars, one switching to fiddle), two vocals)...not in front of the stage as I'd normally do, but roughly adjacent and slightly behind the performers...doubled as FOH and monitors for them. They worked fine for a long room that fit up to about 150, but again I pulled off most of the lows for both vocals and acoustic instruments.

-Our keyboard player has asked if he can use one for stage monitor use at gigs that are PA. I think it would work perfectly for him. I'm not sure about bass. You're working with what amounts to a 500w amp here, and it's 'voiced' towards being more functional in the mids and above...thus having DSP to go deep. I would think that TWO of these might work for a bass rig...but who wants to carry two of them...might as well use a dedicated bass-build.

stealth fighter: nice score!

burning skies: had rehearsal tonight with a loud drummer. the K12 sounded really good. but as much as i like the deep setting, i had to switch to normal in order to keep some definition.
we all loved how it sounded. and loud without the farting. i play 4 string only these days... the range was really nice. but i know what you mean about the lows.

each time i go out with it, i make more adjustments with the chain. it gets better and better.
this hasn't been plug and play by any stretch.

i'll have to agree with everyone here about the K!2 really needing a sub for more aggressive stuff. i will be adding the KSub soon which will relieve the K12 of lowend duty.
i recently auditioned 2-K12's and a KSub with some insanely loud program material. you can almost hear the K12's breathing a sigh of relief. doing what they do best at loud levels with the sub
doing its thing.

the K12 is considered a TOP for a reason. don't think it was originally designed as a stand alone bass amp. can't fault QSC for that. i like stretching things and using stuff for what it wasn't originally intended - to see what happens... safety permitting.

i used to do a lot of coffee houses and restaurants. i plan on doing more. the K12 is REALLY great for that (did a backyard party with it). it just lets my bass shine.
and it's easy to carry around with the wheeled cover.

for the bigger gig's and rehearsal it's the KSub on casters with the K12 on top (for transport). K12 pole mounted (custom short pole) onto the KSub (performance). not much different than hauling a 2x10 and a 15 and a head.
long strange road from the 1960's silver metal flake roll and tuck Kustom i had as my first amp back in 1976.

bottom line: no one perfect solution for everybody. i am happy for now with this setup.

not to mention how this thing SCREAMS with my strat and its hot noiseless pups through the GT-001. so i won't mention it.

if my gear history is any indicator... i'm sure i'll be back here next year touting the new head-of-a-pin sized quantum-entangled head and cabinet.

cheers! and as FZ always said: "Music is the Best!"
