No, I like what music appeals to me, period. I'm actually a child of 80's and 90's music. I just mentioned those groups because I appreciate them not only for the great music and song writing, but also for there staying power, in terms of them being able to maintain a fan base due to there music being timeless. Trust me, the vast majority of music I like is not and never has been popular with the masses.

I'm not looking only at what was popular at there era, I'm looking at what was good music with good songs. They just happened to popular as well. Are you implying that if The Beatles and Led Zepplin hadn't had commercial success, that somehow there songs would be any less great? There's plenty of huge bands from that era who I think are utter crap (The Grateful Dead, Crosby Stills and Nash...ect).Popularity aside, you still didn't mention what new bands have songs as a good The Beatles or Led Zepplin. Let's expand it and throw in 60's Motown.



Who? I mean that seriously. If there are new legitmate rock groups now days making amazing songs, I'd like to check them out. Because I'm always on the look for good music, the problems I no longer find it. All I can ever find is a bunch of Emo Rock and Indie rock or some mondern Metal bands which are just a wall of noise. It's all garbage.

Son, you smile when you say the Greatful Dead and Costly Pills and Hash were crap. Here is another one of the things I am talking about. I get it that you don't like these bands but I would never call them crap. I always liked Watts Stax better than Motown myself.

It sounds to me like you've already made up your mind and are challenging me to surprise you. I promise that the newer stuff I like falls into one of your derogatory categories such as wall-of-noise-modern-metal-garbage and won't mean anything to you.

Understood. You may very well be right. I love a lot of metal music, but other than Lamb of God (who I think is great), virtually all the new stuff I've found is just plain bad in my opinion.

And while we're on the subject of becoming cranky old Farts. I could be dead wrong, but I'm willing to bet that the day will come when you yourself starting feeling that "modern" music isn't as good the "old" stuff. I truely believe that happens to everyone eventually.

I don't like top-40 radio play from any era. It was always bad in my opinion. Billy Squire's "The Stroke" still makes me want to go into a murderous rage!

No, I was saying that a musical era is generally defined by what's big at that time and that it's NOT necessarily the same as what's good from said era. At the time you quoted (60's-70's) those two qualities line up, for you, whereas those two things don't right now.

I have been hearing that for 40 years. That is the entire point of this thread. Every generation has good and bad music, which is very subjective by the way. I seriously don't think there is any one era where music was better than in other era's. There are high point every once in a while where there is a jump in creativity at certian places. The invention or Rock and Roll. San francisco in the late 60's. The invention of punk rock. etc, etc, etc. Somone else mentioned grunge. You can go back to Charlie Christian and even furthe when we are talking about this subject. Ever hear Django Rienhardt?

Well of coarse everything's going to be remembered by someone. I was just implying that in 30 years I don't think anything of today will be held in high regard with the all time greats. That was my point.

There are high point every once in a while where there is a jump in creativity at certian places.

And I'm arguing that we're curretly in a low point. I never said I thought music was going to continue going down hill from here on out. I believe there will be an up trend again, I certainly hope so at least. But today, and even the past 10 years hasn't been a up trend. And again, that's all my opinion, so take it for what you will.

I tend be the same way. The thing is the popular music of the 60's and 70's was also good at the same time. At some point it time, good music and popular music became two seperate things.

Ah you young punks, you don't know what bad music is until you have had to sit through "See Tree How Big It's Grown" by Bobby Goldsboro or anything by Dawn and the Four Seaons Did you know that Jimmy Hendrix first American tour was with the Monkees? Davy Jones told Hendrix to give it up, that his music was the worst crap he had ever heard.

Tiny Tim was like watching and enjoying a movie that is so bad that it is good entertainment. At least at first but he quickly became annoying. I couldn't find the irony font for my last post. I am very aware that each generation has it's share of vomitous swill passed of as music. Boys-N-the-Hood?
Just my opinion of course. I sure don't want to start a "the bad music of my generation is worse than the bad music of your generation" war.

I'm just asking for a few examples of modern groups who are writing songs and making music that is as good as anything that's been made previously. Or better yet, tell me a modern group who you think makes some of the best music you've ever heard.
