Aguilar Agro users?

Here's a good read:
http://www.talkbass.com/threads/aguilar-agro-vs-darkglass-b3k.1045817/page-7#post-15959484

I still have both the Agro and the B3K. Some will swear that the Agro loses bottom end. Some will swear that the Agro adds bottom end.

So what's the definitive answer? Does the Agro lose low end? The answer is.....sometimes. Certain settings can make it lose some low end. If you have the saturation too low, or too high, it does indeed lose some. You just have to find that sweet spot that works for you. Overall I think it's a great pedal that can get very aggressive if you want. It will destroy anything that MXR has, that's for sure :)

here's the flattest curve that i can get out of mine using TrueRta:

AgroCurve.jpg

it's a bit scooped at 500Hz, has a peak at 4KHz, with a steep roll off at 5KHz, and has a 2.5dB bump at 85Hz. there no low end loss at 45Hz but it rolls off from there.

I run mine blended (not to combat low-end loss, but because I like my modulation in parallel with my dirt), and it sounds great. I certainly don't notice any loss in that configuration. That said, I've got my eye on an Empress Multidrive, so it may be going away soon.

/thread lol. the end to a great mystery.

i love mine, great dirt, and it cuts really well. i also like using it inline with my hartke bass attack preamp.

i notice a small sub low loss, but its not something that your going to miss while playing with other people.

thanks for all the tips, guys! yeah the tone sounds perfect to me from the clips. the only concern i really have is the lowend loss, which does seem to be the case (at least for some people). shame. my search was narrowed down to either this pedal or the Fuzzrocious Rat Tail, so it seems i might be headed the RT way.

After owning both, I'd say the Agro loses less bottom than the Rat Tail for sure.

Yes, I agree, the Agro retains plenty of low end.
I read somewhere that it does so by not adding much distortion to the lower frequencies.
Which sounded really good, I like mine a lot.
Although, it's not on my board right now.
Darkglass and Joyo are covering my dirt needs at the moment.
I'm actually considering selling it, just haven't convinced myself yet

wow. i really wouldn't have assumed that. would adding a clean blend to the Rat Tail fix this? how do you think the Agro holds the low end in comparison to something like the MXR M80?

Well I wouldn't consider it a 'problem', and I also wouldn't say that the Rat Tail loses a LOT of bottom end. More of what I'm trying to say is that if you replace an Agro with a Rat Tail with the sole purpose of adding a lot of low end, you will be dissapointed.

And I'm not at all familiar with the M80, sorry.

oh i see what you're saying. it's more that i'm used to using a distortion (mxr m80) with a clean blend. and while i love that, it just doesn't get fuzzy enough when pushed. the Agro seems to have a tone i'd like. just scared it will get lost in the mix. definitely going to try this out though

Not to muddy the waters, but I actually prefer the Agro to the VMT. I have an Agro and a Vintage Deluxe. I bought the Vintage Deluxe thinking that it was going to be the end of my search for overdrive, but I just can't seem to get the sound I want out of it. It just seems to be too congested, and gets lost in the mix too easily. The Agro is fairly dark, but with enough adjustment to presence and contour, I can get some really nice tone out of it. I agree with bongostealth that it does pair very well with a Tone Hammer. I ran that combination for quite a while. I'm going for a thicker, more vintage tone now using a Diamond compressor in front of the Agro.
