Aguilar DB751 - worth it?

I just went to Premier Bass Guitar and AB'd a DB 751 with a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 thru two aguilar GS212 cabinets. Having been an aguilar user for years and swear by their stuff I was expecting to hear a huge difference. Considering the 9.0 was on closeout for $499 new and weighed about 40 something pounds less I assumed there must be a huge difference. Believe it or not I could barely tell the difference what so ever, even other players in the store said they couldn't tell which amp I was playing thru. So I sold my Ag DB659 and my 2,000 watt power amp and played my first gig with a Genz Benx Shuttle 9.0 thru two epifani UL112's series 2 cabinets. The first song the soundman said I needed to turn down my rig, it was filling the whole room up too much without even going thru the mains. I am sold on this micro-amp, I wouldn't go any lower than 9.0 in terms of power since they start cutting off the lows. But the sound was killer and the convenience was even better.

I have a feeling like most technology it will take some time and some more serious RD until they can get to where I would consider one for gigs

Trust me, it's a blessing that you can't hear the difference.

:rollno:

You plug into a shuttlemax / Uber combo and tell me you wouldnt use it on a gig...lol riiiiiiight. :o

The shuttlemax usually gets the nod over my SVT 2 pro.

After lugging my DB750 for practices and gigs Ive decided to pick up a TH500. I'm hoping it will be a good substitute for smaller gigs, but I still like having that massive power at my fingers.
Even if I have the master only at 9:00 and I'm not using all the power, it is so nice to have that dynamic response and full girthy sound.

I used to be a weightlifter so the DB750 still isn't too much of a schlep yet. But, all things being similar, I'd go for the lighter amp at least for practices.

I tried this 751 with my fEARful 1515/66 at a San Diego store. It was a beautiful, muscular tone. I did not buy the head yet because I have a DB 680. I'd use a 751 because it's plug and play. But this combination would probably cover any type of music. I doubt I'll find another head that will sound as great as this one.

This is going to be my rig as of tomorrow.. Except with a 750 and a fEARful with Tweeter :bassist:

Anybody have pics of the inside of a DB751? Would love to see the guts of this thing, have been gassing for one for awhile!

Here you go :)

I currently have a Mesa Carbine M6 & Berg NV412
I play blues, country & classic rock using mostly Fender basses.
Any thoughts on how the 751 would compare for me??
Am I having just another meaningless GAS attack or would there be a noticeable difference & justifiable reason to switch?
Thx

I have owned both and unfortunately couldn't get on with the high-mid emphasis of the M6. It's all personal preference of course, but I personally love the 'huge low end with clarity' and low mids of the DB751. I used them both with an NV610 BTW ;)

It's a lot of money to play with so you'll need to go and give the Aguilar a good blast to see if it's your thing. In the meantime, until I'm out playing big gigs again, the TH500 is stil blowing me away!

Cheers,

Andy

Guys please stop talking about pairing this with a 1515/66. Its one of the few heads that gives me GAS, and my budget is done for the year... :D

I don't have first-hand experience with the M6 to offer a comparison, but the voice of the DB75* is a fantastic fit for the genres you mention (IMO).

The M6 has too much upper mid that I couldn't dial out; the 750/751 has too little, the mid EQ point isn't working too well with either 750 or 751, IMO. The M6 has deep extended low end but not enough mid bass; the 750/751 is about perfect in the bass region, big lush bass that didn't go too deep, round muscular tone from the mid bass, again IMO.

If I have to pick one it would be the 751, koz it's a better starting point for me, and I can get to 90% of my tone. But they both lack a little something I look for.
