Aguilar ToneHammer 700 with Barefaced Three10

Hi Guys,

I have a Three10 on order from Barefaced - currently looking for a new head as my Little Bass Thing is getting kinda crackly and am stuck between the Aguilar AG700 and a ToneHammer 700. I like that the Tonehammer colours your sound somewhat as I love vintage sounding bass but that's kind of what the Three10 does too so am I going to be over egging it or will they work well together? Anyone tried this combo?

I play a Jazz and need a bit of versatility so being able to crank in some funk/slap settings from time to time is required :)

Any advice appreciated

The AG is the better funk/slap amp IMHO. I own both.

Have you considered any of the Mesa Subway Amps? I have the new 800D, the TT800 and have owned the WD800.
If you're looking for something versatile I'd recommend the TT800 because it has two channels that will give you two voicing options.
The main feature to this amp are the (3) 12AT7 preamp tubes that give it the warmth and character you don't find in other Class D amps.
The boogie channel has that vintage overdriven tube sound and the other channel gives you a cleaner option.
I have absolutely nothing against the Aguilar amp. I've owned the TH700 it was great amp, but it's pretty much a one trick pony like the AG700. JMHO

I've played a TH preamp and I've owned a One10 and Two 20. I didn't own these at the same time and never ran them all together. However, I think your concerns about over egging are valid.

I wouldn't pair these as my first choice for a versatile rig, though it could sound quite good for certain applications. I'll defer to anyone who has used the exact rig and their experience. I did own a Nash JB and I could see some tone settings and pickup settings working together.

My preference for the Two10 was a fairly neutral Demeter amp. That amp had a "dark" tone setting that I think puts it more in the TH realm, but I can't recall using it with the Two10.

I have always considered having the TH pedal and AG amp as a clever and the most flexible combination (when considering Aguilar products).

I'd add that the Tonehammer amps can play clean and serve as good slap and excellent finger funk amps.
Just leave the Drive off and don't push the Gain too high. Get your volume from the Master. You can turn up the Treble to taste as well.
Tonehammer amps are more flexible than some give credit for. And the AG amps can get wooly if you do the opposite, that is Push the Gain. But the AG definitely has more Slice when needed, especially with the Bright trigger engaged.

I have the TH350 and the Mesa TT800. I definitely would not say the Tonehammer is a one trick pony or less versatile than the Mesa. If anything the Aguilar probably has a wider array of tones available given the onboard dirt. The Mesa will sort of slightly distort but it isn't really the same thing as the in your face dirt the Aguilar can produce. The Mesa amp is killer and is my main amp nowadays but the Aguilar can do a lot of unique tones you won't really find in other amps.

The Tonehammer amps are great but not the easiest to dial in until you understand how all the controls interact.

Is your 310 with or without tweeter? I briefly possessed an AG500 v2 amp and found even with max EQ assist (incl Bright switch), the top end wasn't happening like I wanted when paired with tweeterless cabs. The AG being regarded as brighter (potentially) than the TH makes me wonder if either amp would be what you want, if your slap sound requires extended top end, and if your 310 is going to be tweeterless. For more available top end with a tweeterless cab I would look at GK or Ampeg amps, just to name a couple.

So cab arrived yesterday about an hour before a gig so I got to try it straight away! I went for a Three10 T so the tweeter is on there but I had it set super low. Tone was rich, warm and above all else FULL - this thing really pumps out air!! Was pleasantly surprise how easy to carry this is too, 21kg is not a problem at all, it's not MarkBass light but not far off. It's a mojotone grille but you can't really tell in this pic
