On one hand, any experience is good experience. Learning all of this the easy way (rehersal room) instead of the hard way (at the gig) is good.
On the other, the more self sacrificed in exploration of this group the less will be there at the end to collect the reward alongside them.
Being younger-ish guy (32) in a power trio with a 25 and 27 yr old, occassionally enhanced by an incredible psych organist who grew up on the songs we play (surf, doors, who, etc) and approached us because he shat himself that we were even playing the songs, I can say our experience has been this: if you want to play this music, start your own band of young guns and blow these songs up propperly in your own vein fumbling on them as one unit. Then when you add the veterans of the era its a soul match as much as it is a chart match.
If this is just to mess around and get some new experiences and enjoy playing in a band again, make sure that is their aim too. If this is training for battle on the local stages, you are not only going to be playing catch-up on songs but also catch-up on dialing in a variety of instruments...some of which will be all up in your musical "space." I don't think its correct to bring in fresh bassist, then BAM keyboardist, then BAM horns next week...
These are incredible expectations, which means little thought is being given to you on an increasing level from day one.
Jake and Elwood didn't BUILD the band back together.
To me these folks are building the skin first and the skeleton last.
I'll stop, I'm for sure not the sage of all bass. For sure learn these songs, share the music. But good lord do not be the gum they stick in the hole. Its bad enough they've already picked your flavor for you (you're spearmint). Are you a bassist or the Ken Doll that fits in the Danelectro Outfit?!?!
I applaud you for working your tail off learning these songs, sticking to it, riding out these practices, and swallowing your pride to further the experience. That is no small feat. And still remaining positive. I'll join you, and predict this will forge you into the next Jaco (non-wacko).
