Al Caldwell on A&E Live by Request

I haven't seen the show yet because were still on Tour but it
was a fun Night. I'm trying to play solid bass with Vanessa and
I'm glad that it came off that way. I can always overplay on my originals! :-) Everywhere we go ,people ask me about my Benavente 9. I'm a lucky man in many ways. Your kind words make me want to practice harder. I'll e-mail again around the 22d of December. Take Care.....Al Caldwell

When I saw that Vanessa Williams was coming on, I was anxious to see which bass Al was playing - I didn't know if it was a newer gig or an older one being re-shown. Awesome to see Al and the Bennie. I just found this thread a minute ago, and agree with all points, Al, you were phenomenal. Made me want to be a better player, and made me want to get my Benavente SCB ordered sooner too!

I dont know if anybody here mentioned it, but Al was tearing up the upright too. I was mesmerized on, what, the second song, when the upright came out?

Wow that bass is beautiful, after the grooves I heard in the mpeg posted before I'll be picking up that new Vanessa Williams Cd and it is not the sort of thing I'd be jumping up and down for.

I'm not knocking him for playing a nine string I love extended range basses but I didn't notice that much of the higher range being used. I could be wrong since all I saw were the clips as mentioned before, I'm just interested as to whether they were looking for a nine string bassist when you were hired or if they just got one by luck ;) and if you play more than they had originally wanted for the bassist i.e they wrote the parts for 4-5 strings.

But this is by far the best example fo an extended range bassist really grooving well with maybe the exception of Anthony Jackson but I feel thats a fair comment :D

I'd also like to know what amps or DI's your using on that.

I recorded the bass parts on the last 2 albums with my 9 string bass. I
tried to play tasteful bass lines. When I am a leader on a project, then I overplay as much as GOD will allow without striking me dead. We have 2 guitar players and 2 keyboard players . All the higher fequency's are taken. I'm trying to look at the instrument as a tool of many possibilties instead of (play all the notes on every song.) This bass has a great rythem and lead guitar sound. It isn't needed with Vanessa's band , but I need it in my band. Al Caldwell p.s. I use the
Tone Bone by Radial. Chuck Raniey and Will Lee hipped me to the company. I bought mine from Brian Barrett. I still ended up with the endorsement. I'll beg for the a/b switch box!

Another instance where i'll make this comment. This board does not only make me want to buy more gear that i don't really need [want is entirely different], but also makes me aware that i really really really need to spend more hours than i've got in the shed.

I dig the bass, dig the playing, and dig the gig. Definately enjoyed it. On the few visits i made to Al's site-i was in awe. So many great players on here, and with that note-i informed the bass instructor at a college I am auditioning at of this site [Scott Mason @ CCPA]. :bassist:

Wow thanks for the information Al, I hope I didn't offend you with my comments as I really am interested in your playing and that gig. I've got a couple more questions if you don't mind.

Hows the nine string tuned is it a low B or low F#?
Do you find the Radial very transparent I did try one but I wasn't impressed but I was looking for something to really add some oompf to my sound (I ended up with the aphex bass exciter), but at the moment I'm also looking for a multi function hi quality DI box, so any info you can give me on the radial would be greatly appreciated.

Is the new Vanessa Williams CD as good as those live clips or do you get to let loose a little more live?

I use the Tonebone as a direct box more than anything. It adds a little more warmth. If you record straight to Pro Tools it can sound brittle if you don't use a pre amp. Also the Yamaha mixing boards on tour are thin sounding to me. I use the box as a line driver and to help if anything sounds diffrent than i'm used to.I tune my Benavente 9 F# to Bb. The Conklin 9 is tuned B to Eb. And the 11 will be C# to Eb. The 7
string Low End will be E to Bb. On her new Cd I get to play a little more but I try not to over shadow the singer or the song. I'm really proud of "Never can Say Good bye". He had the London Philharmonic
double bass part I made up. It's really funky. I'm working on an instructional DVD with Chuck Rainey. I'm going to ask Bob Babbit and Tom Barney to help because of their contribution to so much recorded
