Alembic defacement!!

Unbelievable,

Look what someone did to their beautiful Alembic bass!!!!

They used a permanent marker!

You can find this bass on eBay.

:crying:

Two quick comments:
1) The older Alembics did not use a poly finish.
2) Some people (like me) consider basses a work of art. Thus, although it still sounds the same, it is like defacing a Rembrandt.

It's an Epic. They've had a poly finish on them since they were first built. :)

You can get Sharpie off this bass. You can't get Sharpie off a Rembrandt (at least, not anywhere near as easily). Compared to some of the bad decisions I've seen people make with "boutique" instruments, this ranks pretty low on the scale.

I happen to have a right-handed 1998 Alembic Epic bass and it does not have a poly coating. They started putting them on basses later on.

Also, what does it matter what the level of damage is? The simply point I was making it that it was defaced (jeez). You could have easily used masking tape to get the same results.

I love good woodwork, and I get the work of art thing, but comparing an Alembic to a Rembrandt might be a stretch. Still, I agree that it's pretty silly to take a magic marker to a nice bass. Why not use a little sticker or something that can easily be removed and that won't leave any damage?

Ask Mica-all Epic basses have had a poly finish. The earliest ones had a coating that was formulated to simulate an oil finish, but it's still poly. Yours may have been custom-ordered with something else, but that doesn't apply to the entire model line.

Regardless, my point was that the bass in the auction, being a '98 and having been manufactured several years into the production run, isn't "early" and is likely to have a poly finish. With that in mind, it would be no big deal to remove the "defacement."
