26 Years old (1989) Time fliesso it's basically 16 years old, but today it would sell for about 20K brand new..... considering inflation and price increases, what's a fair price? $7-8K? he seems to want 12K on the Alembic club forum, but that would seem more appropriate for a 2-3 year old used, no?
I don't think he/she will get $12K, that's about $6K less than a brand new one on which you can specify all details yourself.
I've seen used Series II sell for around 3000-7000, this is an extremely nice one so 7500 is no wishful thinking imho.
If you buy a new Alembic, you must take for granted that it devalues at least 50% the moment it leaves the factory.
If you're lucky and find the right person for that bass/guitar, you might get a little more. But you'll certainly take a major hit if you decide to sell.
That's why it's best to start with used Alembics before you go custom.
I had 4 used and 1 new one from a dealer stock (the above fretless) before I got my Custom Elan, so there was some experience with different neck profiles and electronics that helped a lot in making some decisions.
Used Alembics tend to hold their value well and I've seen those prices go up a little in the last years. There are also abnormalities on the used market, Essence and Orion (Orion costs the same as an Epic) seem to sell for more than Spoilers and I've seen some signature models sell for Series $$$ ($3000+)
