As I write this I still have the bruises and black eye from the Calgary show this past weekend. Hell of a show, though I remember little about Webster's bass playing due to a variety of substances and blows to the head. He didn't cut through the mix too well from what I remember, but he was playing some semblance of what the guitar did, making for some challenging and respect-worthy playing.

His bass playing on Tomb of the mutilated is awesome, love his sound with the razor sharp highs and deep lows.

All I said is that ain't singing...get rid of that front man and the other guys sound fine...

If you hate Death Metal vocals, you hate Death Metal (for the most part). That vocal style is a big part of DM, it comes with the territory.

I really think Death metal vocals are a lot like rapping, a lot of people don't like/get it, but it's atonal nature allows to concentrate entirely on rhythm, without worrying about melodic concerns. It makes a lot of sense considering a vocal melody over top of a lot of Death Metal would sound goofy, since the music is so overly complex more often than not.

But at the same time, it's a matter of degree. You can argue that Lamb of God is on the lighter side of Death Metal, and their vocals generally stay just below that cookie-monster level of bands like Cannibal. And yes, I've heard LoG's old stuff where it was harder to understand what was being sung. I see his point for sure - it's all a matter of what you consider death metal as well.

By the way...I love Alex Webster as a player (he's a Spector guy)...
