In my area this winter has been a wicked one when it comes to problems of wood shrinkage, with lots of guitars suffering top and back cracks and many instruments with protruding fret ends, also known as fret sprout or whiskers. And I've seen a lot of online advice about how to deal with those sharp fret ends, some good, and some rather bad advice.

First, let's understand what fret sprout is. It's the ends of the frets protruding beyond the edge of the fingerboard. When you run your fingertips along the edge of the fretboard you may feel them catch a bit on the sharp tangs of the fret. In some cases it just catches a bit. In really bad cases it may be enough to cut your finger. That's fret sprout.

But are the frets actually sprouting? No. It's that the fretboard is shrinking a bit across its width. The wood shrinks and the frets don't, so the ends of the frets stick out a bit. Why does it happen? Is it a fault of manufacture? Well generally it is not a fault of manufacture. If anything it's more likely to be a user fault. If you don't humidify your instrument in the months when the air is drier, the wood is likely to shrink. Even a well-seasoned piece of wood will continue to adapt to humidity changes in the way wood does, by expanding and contracting.

Some species of wood react more to these changes in humidity than others, and even within a species, some boards will react more than others. Quarter cut wood will shrink less across its grain than flat sawn. And a finished or sealed wood will also react less than an unsealed one. So you can not call it a manufacturing flaw when you decide you want a maple fingerboard (generally more reactive than rosewood), that's unfinished, and you don't keep the instrument well-humidified in the winter months. So preventive measures are simple - keep the instrument humidified.

But now you have fret sprout and you need to deal with it. What should you do? I would say take it to a pro to have the fret ends dressed. It takes some practice to do a good job, and it is necessary to use the right tools. And there's where the problems lie. First, much of what you see online will tell you that you can do this yourself, and some go so far to say that a pro like me will advise you not to do it yourself because I want your money. That's generally not true. It's a fussy job that doesn't pay well and with the backlog most of us have in our shops we hardly are interested to add it to our workload for the bit it pays.

The real reasons to have a pro do it is because he/she has the practice and the right tools for the job. And then there's the consideration that if you do it yourself and botch it, it's on you. If the pro botches the job, it's on him/her to fix it.

So what are the right tools and techniques? I will delve into that in the next post or two, along with some examples of what it looks like when it's done well and when it's done poorly.

OK on to the treatment of fret sprout. There are two basic ways to treat the condition:

1. Trim the protruding fret ends
2. Re-hydrate the fretboard so it expands back to its original dimension.

Working on the principle of the least intrusive solution, it would seem that item 2 would be best. It alters nothing on the instrument and allows conditions to return to "normal" with no drastic measures. And indeed it may be the best solution, but only if you keep the instrument in a humidity controlled environment. For many of us that's not really feasible. So we are left with treatment #1 - trimming the fret ends. It's not a bad solution. If done when the condition is at its worst, it will only need to be done once in the life of the instrument. we trim the frets when the fretboard has shrunk as far as it will, then as the seasons change and the fretboard expands again the frets wil be slightly behind the edge of the board. When it gets dry again the board shrinks back to its worst-case width and we've already dealt with that, so all is good.

But there seem to be a lot of suggestions on how to trim the fret ends properly. There may be several valid ways to do it, but here I will describe the way I think is best. First let's look at the condition:

It's pretty easy to see that the tang if the fret is protruding a bit. Trimming this is done with a file. But what file? And that's where you will get a lot of differing opinion.

First off, the file needs to be a fine one, generally the finer the better. We want to trim the fret without damaging the surrounding wood and/or finish. It's also particularly useful if the file is single cut. We'll get into the why a bit later.

Next, the file needs to be run along the edge of the fretboard. This pic from Fender is the way to do it:

Why is this not a good way? First it's far too easy to tilt the file a bit and consequently cut a groove in the fretboard edge. Secondly, the tape on the edge of the fretboard will leave the fret end proud of the edge of the board by the thickness of the tape. It may be better than when you started, but it still will not be flush the way it should be.

But without taping the fretboard edge, how do you keep the file from scarring wood or finish? Well, you don't. But you keep it to a minimum and polish it out afterward. Keeping the scratching to a minimum is a matter of using the right tool and utilizing the right technique, bolstered by a good deal of practice. I already mentioned that the file should be fine and single cut. Here's a single cut file on the left and a double-cut on the right:

Notice that the teeth run at one angle on the single-cut file. If we orient those teeth so that the grooves are nearly parallel to the length of the fretboard as we file we can keep the abrasion of the wood to a minimum. The file should be angled like this:

You can see that the file teeth are not exactly parallel to the direction of the neck, just slightly angled. You slide the file along the edge of the fretboard parallel to the neck:

Now if the file is fine and sharp, and if you are applying only light pressure, the file will skip along the wood with barely a scratch but will grab and cut on the fret ends. Keep the file flat on the edge of the fretboard and follow the small radius on the edge of the board. Any scratches left on the wood can be polished off with 1200 grit or finer wet-and-dry sandpaper or buffing pads. At the same time that polishing will remove minor file marks from the ends of the frets.

Some advocate using this kind of a rig to dress the fret ends:

This is not the right tool for the job - it is for putting the bevel on the ends of the frets and will not trim the tangs. There is a variation of this tools where the file is held perpendicular rather than at an angle. It will trim the fret tangs, but is rather a clumsy tool for a job that requires a delicate touch.

And there are a number of files that are sold as fret end dressing files that are the wrong tool for this job, though the name of the file suggests it's what is needed. These files are narrow files meant to round the fret ends:

They are not useful for trimming the tangs at all. Even for their designed purpose, they require a good deal of skill to use. Here's an example of some fret end dressing that was done badly using the wrong tool:

i'm a firm believer in option #1, attack the frets while they're sprouted so it's never a problem again.

interesting about the idea of holding the file at that angle, never tried that. (i'd be scared that if the file left one fret end before it landed on the next one it would be free to dig into the wood between frets)

we do get all four seasons here in SE VA so fret sprout is a common thing i deal with as we get through winter. i've always just used the stewmac 6" fret leveling file, the single cut one like you mentioned. in fact that's basically all i use it for.

i just run it parallel along the edge of the neck, where if i do it right it sort of glides over the finish but attacks the fret metal. a bit of cleanup with the little fret end file and maybe some blocked fine sandpaper if needed and it's good to go.

i don't even charge extra for it, i do it as part of a setup, just takes a few minutes.
 
Thank you so much for the helpful information in this thread. I’m still mulling over whether I invest in some tools and attempt to address this myself on several of my instruments or take them in to a shop. From a cost perspective I’m thinking the former is the best option.

In the interim, I plan to pick up a couple of hygrometers from Stew-Mac and some type of humidifying device. I have mostly gig bags and just picked up a multi-guitar stand so I can have multiple instruments out, so I am on the fence whether I go with the case humidifiers and/or a room humidifier. Any suggestions/recommendations on this?
 
Thanks @Turnaround I appreciate your guidance. Any recommendations for humidifiers (warm or cool mist?) or dehumidifiers, now that you mention excess humidity? The space is relatively small but I often leave the entry doors open.
 
I should add that it’s tough to tell exactly what is sharp / raised on my instruments. I’ve read a lot on the site here and watched a few videos on YouTube.

This video seems to address the corners of the fret that lay flush to the fingerboard as opposed to the ends that are set into the board that would require a somewhat different approach. Either that or I am misunderstanding something, I guess the approach may differ depending on how much the wood has shrunk.

I tend to avoid misting humidifiers having found that most of them generate a fine white dust if there are minerals in the water you use. I use wicking type humidifiers, though you need to be vigilant about cleaning them or else you may be spreading mold spores. Put a humidistat in the room to monitor the RH - most machines' automatic feature is highly unreliable, and keep the humidistat away from the humidifier to get a balanced reading.
 
The StewMac video doesn't address one important part of the fret sprout problem - the fret tang which will likely be protruding too. A fine-cut flat file is used along the edge of the fretboard flush to the edge of the board to knock down the fret tang ends. If the file is fine and sharp enough it will skid over the finish on the edge of the neck while catching the fret tangs and knocking them down. Then you proceed with the fret dressing that Dan Erlewine demonstrates in the video.
 
@Turnaround I’m still trying to work up the nerve to attempt this repair on one of my instruments. Some are quite slight so I’m wondering if just humidifying could help correct. Any recommendations on hygrometers? I’ve been looking at this one on Stew Mac.

Humidity may help. But it rarely cures "sprout."

This may seem like heresy to many, but it is my belief that instruments that "live" in the same environment that I do should "learn to adapt themselves to that environment." Attempting heroic measures (single room humidification) or gimmicks (in case humidification) may work for some. But they often fail due to a lack of monitoring, leaky walls in either a building or case, temperature fluctuations in the shoulder seasons, or any of a number of other things.

Of course, if you're lucky enough to have whole house air conditioning for the summer, a good heating system for the winter (if necessary), humidity control for all seasons, all in a well constructed building none of this is an issue for you. That is, most of the time, on most instruments, depending on where they were before you acquired them, and where you take them and for how long.

Ultimate heresy: Fret sprout is a good thing. It usually only happens once. So the sooner it happens the sooner it is taken care of. Then it is no longer a problem.
 
The humidity got down to 30% in my living room this winter and my US P-Bass sprouted. The ends weren't sharp cuz I think they roll the edges on the US ones, but it was still annoying feeling them hit my hand as I went up and down the neck. I phoned the place I bought it from and they said get a humidifier for the room and case humidifiers for the case. They said to try that first cuz if they filed them and the neck expanded again in the summer you could get big holes in the wood where the fret ends are. So, I tried what they said. I got the humidity up to 50% in the room and up to 60% in the case and now it's almost back to normal. I got clay humidifiers, they're only 5 bucks and made my own by putting a damp sponge in an open soap dish and of course keeping track of humidity and temperature by putting a digital hygrometer and thermometer in the case. Soon, I think I will take some of the humidifiers out and try to keep the inside of the case at 50% like the room. I almost forgot. I've played a Bass that had fret sprout and the frets got filed down and then when summer came the neck expanded again and there were giant holes in the wood at the fret ends and I hated that almost as much as the sprout. You can feel the holes rubbing on your hand when you play up and down the neck. So, I'm hoping humidifying will cure it and they will be flat again and next winter I make sure the room is humidified and no more sprout. I hate fighting "The Humidity Battle." I've been playing for 35 years and never seen fret sprout before. It caught me off-guard. I have a US Strat that I bought at almost the same time as the Bass and it didn't sprout. I hate fret sprout and fret shrinkage, as I call it.

I wouldn't rely on humidification to give you a good long-term solution. I would trim the frets when the problem is at its worst.
There is some danger of over-humidification. A 50% level of humidity in the room is OK, but 60% in the case is excessive. I wouldn't be concerned about getting "big holes" in the wood where the frets are. It's insignificant.

I don't recommend the use os an in-case humidifier. It is too easy to over humidify in such an enclosed environment. I recommend that you humidify the room to 40-50%. I have always looked after my instruments by humidifying the room, never the case. The oldest of my instrument I have owned since 1964. There are no issues with any of the instruments as a consequence of lack of humidity. Nor over-humidification for that matter.

Ok, thanks for the information. My Jazz Bass didn't sprout but I monitor the humidity in the case, no in-case humidifiers, it's at a steady 45% since I got the room humidifier. So, I guess it should be ok. My Strat didn't sprout either and the humidity in that case is at a steady 50% with no in-case humidifiers. I guess it'll be ok too.
So, should I take the humidifiers out of the P-Bass case since it's almost back to normal and see what the humidity stays at in there with no humidifiers? So, humidity levels should be 40-50% in the rooms and the cases for the best care of your instruments in the winter?

What percentage of humidity would cause over-humidification and make the neck on a Bass expand causing the frets to shrink inside the wood. I call it Fret Shrinkage. I don't know the proper term for it. I assume in Ontario, Canada fret sprout is way more common than fret shrinkage? It doesn't get very humid here in the summer.
