OP here. Really appreciate everyone's responses. I replaced my 1spot and daisy chain with an MXR mini Iso-Brick, running the 800 mA output to the SCR-DI and 300mA to the other pedals. That got rid of the "helicopter" sound and the morse code. I still have the hiss but it is lower in volume. I did some more testing and found that the hiss is coming from my basses (Schecter Session Riot and same from the Squire Jazz Modern, both with active pickups). I have a gig next weekend so will see how sounds over the PA then. It will be better at least, and gate and eq changes at the mixer might be enough.
So a multi-effects unit won't solve my problem right now, but the HX Stomp looks like a real winner and I may get one yet. Or if the budget doesn't allow, then the Zoom B6 looks like great bang for the buck.
