Almost got robbed...

So a couple little punks thought it would be cute to kick in my door last Thursday. I can't fathom why they would walk up in plain daylight, with not one, but TWO, of my neighbors sitting on their front porches smoking and watching them and think they would be able to safely kick in my door. They called the police and had a complete description waiting for them when they got there. All my gear was sitting within about ten or so feet of the front door in plain view. The little sweethearts did not get one single thing from my home. Why? Because the freakin alarm went off the second they kicked in the door and they ran off like a couple of pansies.

They are actually quite fortunate that I was not home. I have a pit bull that I normally left in a kennel when I was out. Notice that is "left", as in past tense. I might as well take the kennels doors off their hinges now. I'm also a gun owning red neck. I guess that I'm pretty lucky that: 1) they did not get anything, and 2) that I wasn't home to shoot the little buggers. It would probably have been a major hassle getting the blood stains and brain matter out of the carpet.

Results: Well, for starters I had to get a new lock and some repair work done on my door. No biggie. $130 isn't going to break me. My dog now has free range of the house when I at all times and the damn cat will just have to deal with it. There is now a sign on the door that reads "There is a pit bull loose in this house. Feel free to kick the door in again jerk. Less dog food I will have to buy." Finally, I'm sitting at work right now filling out an application for an Oklahoma conceal and carry license. I had to walk through the house with only a pocket knife to let the dog out and grab a pistol. I've been meaning to get one of those for years now. My family (mostly law enforcement) has also been badgering me about getting one. This just gives me the kick in the rear I need to get one.

Moral of the story, don't store your gear anywhere without an alarm and make sure that you get all buddy-buddy with your neighbors. Dogs and guns are major plusses also.

I wouldn't say you're lucky. The punks would have probably tripped over something and killed themselves before they got out the door. Still, they could have broken something in the process.

I never understood why getting a CCW is so important. How long does it take you to draw your weapon, load it, take the safety off, aim, and fire? Probably longer than someone will just stand there. =/

vigilante justice. hello a**hole, meet mr. ruger. want to see what a 44 hole looks like.

Well in my case it would be "Say howdy to Mr. Kahr k40. Want to see what kind of hole .40 cal hollow point can make?"

Seriously I am not Charles Bronson in Deathwish here. I just think that if more people exercised their right to defend their homes/persons/families, eventually these morons would quit this crap.

I would assume that the weapon would be already loaded and not all handguns are equipped with a safety. With a proper holster you can draw, aim and fire very quickly.

That would be why you carry a weapon with the safety on the trigger ala Glock or sans safety as in the case of my Kahr. And why in the heck would anyone keep a firearm unloaded. That is comparable to removing all the gas from your car everytime you park.

Look I fully understand that guns can be a hot button issue for some people. If, for some reason, that part of my post irks you, feel free to ignore it. Just focus on the dog, alarm, and pro neighborhood community bits of my post.

I don't now. Something about the law, I think.

The Law said:
Except as otherwise provided by the provisions of the Oklahoma Self- Defense Act or another provision of law, it shall be unlawful to transport a loaded pistol, rifle or shotgun in a landborne motor vehicle over a public highway or roadway. However, a rifle or shotgun may be transported clip or magazine loaded and not chamber loaded when transported in an exterior locked compartment of the vehicle or trunk of the vehicle or in the interior compartment of the vehicle notwithstanding the provisions of Section 1289.7 of this title when the person is in possession of a valid handgun license pursuant to the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act.

So basically you can't have a loaded gun with you in a public place. Unless you can find these provisions that state otherwise. I admit, I didn't search too long, and my Legalese isn't too good.

Actually this basically states that you need a conceal and carry license to carry a concealed loaded firearm.

How? It says you can't have a pistol, rifle, or shotgun. But that you can have a rifle or shotgun if you have the CCW. Nothing about the pistol.

Even in your great state of Washington you are allowed to have a concealed carry permit and carry a *gasp* loaded pistol.

Roughly 2 seconds. Maybe 2.5.

Glad it turned out good for you.

It really pissed me off when my house was burglarized years ago. It's not just the missing/broken stuff but the fact that someone entered my safe place, my home, unannounced and un-invited and had their way with the place.

It is violating to your soul.

My neighbor years ago helped the guy climbing in his window late one night back outside via 12 gauge shotgun.

It was deemed self defense.

I am lucky that I have about half older and younger neighbors . The older ones are up a lot more a night than one might think and have nothing better to do than be nosy. The younger ones are all a bunch of divorced females.:D

If you think that's not a lot of time, you are sorely mistaken. I can run up to you and stab you in that time.

I'm not trying to be an anti-gun hippy or whatever the polar opposite of "gun owning red-neck" is supposed to be, just saying that just because you have a gun doesn't make you invincible. Be careful.

I've never fully understood the whole "dog as a protector" thing. Admittedly, I've never been attacked by a fully-trained police dog, but back in my punk-skateboarding days, I was attacked by a pit-bull, a german shepard, some white, weird japanese dog attack-dog (that guy was MEAN) and some mutt. I've never had much trouble changing their minds about going after me.
