Alphonso Johnson: For Bass Players Only

In spite of all that came after, I’d still rather listen to Mysterious Traveler, and I’m fortunate to have seen WR with Alphonso. This tune is such a great collection of badass riffs…
I used to wear this album out during high school and college!
My guitar player friend I was gigging with told me that Billy Cobham was coming to town from a flyer he saw at a record store. Which was odd because we never heard anything on our local Jazz and Underground radio stations. So we got tickets and went.
This was the tour. We had no idea before we got there. It was glorious
It was a combination of that album and the Montreux Jazz Fest…
Oh and it was just them, no warm up.
Not many people there. Probably because lack of publicity. When they came out George say, “not too many here, oh well we’ll still party!”

It is hard to be a more positive human than George Duke.
It was at the Portland Paramount Theater. Only about 2/3 of the bottom floor was full. They didn’t even open the balcony. It was nice in the fact we all could get up close and all who were there were very appreciative. Almost like it was a private show.
The next time I got to see Al was with Bob Weir’s Bobby and the Midnites, also with Billy Cobham in tow. That was at a smaller venue, Euphoria Tavern. Another nice show
