Alphonso Johnson Recomendations

Alphonso Johnson during the fusion era was phenomenal. He had a seriously loose, but tight groove that worked in Weather Report just as well as Jaco, he just was not as outfront.

The Alphonso years are my favorite period in the history of Weather Report. Mysterious Traveler has to be one of my top ten all time albums. I was 18 when I picked that album up, besides Alphonso and Wayne Shorter's beautiful playing, WR were one of the first bands in jazz to use the studio as another instrument.

Órale,
Everyone here has listed alot of Alphonso's great work, but last nite, I seen and heard him in The Gregg Rolie band! My suggestion's are more "Groove" oriented, Jeffery Osbournes "Stay with me Tonight" for one, but my favorite is Alphonso's Latin style groove's with " Abraxas Pool" ! Check out this band that " Out-Santana's Santana's Band"!!! :smug:

Alphonso's solo on Blues March off of that LP still blows me away. My 30 year old vinyl copy is starting to show its age, I wish they would get around to releasing it on CD again. Maybe give it to Wounded Bird and let them release it.;)

I have a CD from Japan called the Aurex Jazz Festival '80 that has AJ and the Brecker Bros with Peter Erskine on drums that has Bahamma Mama on it that's pretty cool. Everything but the player names is in Japanese so I have no idea what it says.

Crusaders: Live in Japan
+1 on Black Market and Mysterious Traveler, as well as Weather Reports "Live and Unreleased" for smoking live versions of some pre-Black Market tunes.
Steve Kimock Band: Eudemonic

In concert on Archive.org, most of the Eudemonic tunes were done in shows in the version of the SKB with Reed Mathis. Awesome stuff all around.

...guess I lucked out-
Audiophile Imports stocked Montreux Summit about 10 yeras ago & I bit the bullet on the Import price (usually, that's a sure-fire path to a Domestic release).

...I will pull out that McLaughlin album today. I had totally forgotten about it! Thanks.
