Alphonso Johnson

Mysterious Traveler really made an impact on my playing. There was so much space between the notes. Gave me confidence to not play all the time.
That album came out not long after Pink Floyd's Dark Side, Mysterious Traveler was my "headphone" album when a lot of people went for the Dark Side Of The Moon as their "headphone" album.;)

No AJ but this is still one of my favorite WR tracks...

This has an ECM-vibe, no?
Just realized the cover art is even ECM-like.

I bought Mysterious Traveler when it was pretty new. I was just getting into Jazz, had my subscription to Downbeat, and bought this because-
IIRC, this was the "Jazz Album of the Year" performed by the "Jazz Group of the Year".

I admit, this album did not strike me as what Jazz was supposed to sound like.

A cousin turned me onto it when I was around 17.

These days,”tales spinning” became probably my favorite Weather Report album...there’s some outstanding music in there, and the rhythm section Alphonso/Ndugu is unbelievable...another AJ album that I literally wore out is George Duke’s “the aura will prevail”...it also features a couple of great solos and a HUGE PBass tone...definitely one of my biggest influences and favorite players :-)

Mysterious traveler is a great album, even if I prefer Tale spinning, but has a painfully horrible production,IMHO...drums sound like the guy was playin’in the basement ..
