Just wanted to let you know that my new Alter Ego EUB arrived yesterday, and it is an amazing instrument that deserves more attention than it gets. That’s why I thought I post this in a separate thread.
First and foremost, the sound is amazing, and with the combination of a condenser on the bridge and a polymer pickup under the bridge you can dial in many different characters.

What for me was super important was the character of the sound, it comes very close to the shape/envelope as an acoustic upright, which the three EUB’s I tried before all lacked. Especially the attack part is very close to what makes an upright sound so unique.
(I have had an NS, a Yamaha SLB200 and ‘the stud’. They all sounded more like a ‘large fretless bass')
It is light weight, only around 6 kilo, the neck is detachable if needed, there is no need for an adjustable bridge because you can adjust the angle of the neck (on the fly) and it is beautifully built.
The soundboard is made of Italian spruce, which is mounted ‘floating’ on an aluminum frame. And I guess the large soundboard makes it sound the way it sounds, much different from the more or less semi-solid design of other EUB’s.
Their EUB comes in two versions: the basic model ‘techno’ and the more luxury ‘carbon’ version. The carbon version is identical to the techno, except for some details:
there is a carbon back cover so that you do not see the aluminum body/frame, it has a wooden tailpiece, and the two volume knobs are mounted on the side of the carbon body instead of at the bottom.
The techno version is just below 3000 euro, the carbon is 700 euro more. I liked the ‘tech look’ of the techno, but in the end decided to go for the carbon version.
If you’re looking for an EUB that feels and sounds like an acoustic upright, then you should check this one out! They are based in Italy, Europe.
