Alternative to Fender P

Unfortunately,I don’t seem to be a P bass kinda guy.
G&L LB-100s and SB-1s are both excellent specimens. The bridges on G&Ls are beautiful (and extremely comfortable for palm-muting), the build quality is excellent, the bodies are more streamlined than a Fender P, and the pickups/electronics are very good.
The LB-100 sounds like a traditional P, while the SB-1, with its wide-range high-output MFD pickup, is on the modern end of the spectrum. But because the SB-1's tone and volume controls are highly sensitive and interactive, turning the volume down quite a bit and playing with the tone control will move an SB-1 into more vintage territory, too.

I have a USA LB-100 (pictured in my avatar) and absolutely love it - it's my main bass. I've always loved the tone of the p-bass but could never quite get along with their standard, wider necks...so I ordered mine with the "jazz" neck.

I've previously owned a US Lakland 4464 (P) Bass. Sold it to "fund another purchase". Absolutely one of the best P-style basses I've ever touched. I did a handful of gigs with it. I actually dropped an EMG Geezer Butler pickup in it which took it over the effing top. I just remember every single note on that neck rang with absolute authority and much sustain. The high notes literally sang.

If I need to say P, I do it with an NS-2A with GZRs and a 3-band HAZ clone.
Sometimes I gotta go passive and palm mute while thumbing, but whatever. That's how I started playing on a middle school P with flats in 1985.

I've owned MIM Fenders. And even owned a 61 Fender Pbass all original and to be honest the best Fender Pbass i have is a 2000s MIJ 62 Reissue!

Yamaha BBP34. Strictly speaking a PJ but I hardly ever use the bridge pickup.
Sandberg California VS. Mine is a custom order passive ONLY with a Kloppmann PB63 pickup.
Both of these are easily as good as any Fender Custom Shop I've tried and a fraction of the cost. And they completely blow away any similarly priced current Fender production models like the American Professional/Original.

Ha Ha, Andy, no I'm not at all surprised, as we've discussed. I have to say I love mine, too, but for some unknown reason, I play it the least and right now, and I can't figure out why. I know it has nothing to do with the Duncans, which I love. It might have something to do with the feel of the neck. I actually prefer my BB450 and BB1024x (both P/Js, played as 100% P) for both sound and feel.

I own 6 Yamahas, including a BB1024x. Love them all. Delighted to hear you declare the 20XXs the best. Wish I could afford one.

I'm a Yamaha guy -- own 6 of them -- but haven't had the chance to try the BB34. Glad you like yours.
I have played and owned many P variations including a '69 Fender. The new ones are so good now that I sold the '69. I'm a huge fan of the Peavey Fury basses from the '90s (I have two of them). The necks are more like a J which suits me better. Love to play those live,
but if I'm recording the LTD Vintage 214 is the best sounding P I've ever played. It's not expensive at all. The only knock on it is the neck is bigger than the Fury's so I don't play it live. But if you're recording....man, that's the one. I put a black pick guard on mine. They usually are white.

I own one (1966 Fender) P-bass. I consider it the archetypal P. I also own a MII DeArmond (Guild clone) Jet-Star bass with a P-pu. As long as it has a P pu and it's "near or at that" location - it should sound more-or less like a P-bass.
