Something about the phrase "amazing bassist/drummer combinations" makes me think of rhythm sections that sound telepathic...the guys that can improvise a groove that sounds meticulously pre-conceived, who play together as if they're linked at the brain (and the groin) and so produce these seemingly impossible parts that flow organically and evolve intelligently as a single unit, yet retain the spark and danger of spontaneity. That's "amazing" to me. And in that category I'd list:

Viewed from the perspective of an ordinary/mediocre bass player who's played with a lot of different people in a lot of different situations, I guess there's nothing quite as satisfying as when I get a good lock-in with a drummer/percussionist... I've often wondered if the experience is the same for the more masterful players on this list.
