I agree with the look on the caiman's face. Here is a closer look.

It may look like a fabulous fashion statement, but this unlikely friendship serves a health purpose for the insects.

Photographer Mark Cowan captured this amazing sight while visiting the Amazon for a reptile and amphibian study with the Herpetology Division of the University of Michigan.

However, the sight isn't particularly unusual. Butterflies feast on the salt that collects on caimans' skin. Reptiles' tears contain the vital element, which, in some regions, is scarce. Bees and butterflies will often drink the tears of reptiles to supplement their diet.

The strangest thing about the photo seems to be the meticulous grouping of the butterflies, how each butterfly has landed beside an identical butterfly of its same species.

The yellow butterflies reminded me of some photos I took at a butterfly farm on holiday back in 2010. Here's two of them....(I love my macro lens...... don't use it enough these days)
