Pyramid Ice Crystal Halos Over Finland​

Explanation: What if the atmosphere above you became one gigantic lens? This actually happens when a nearly transparent sheet of Invalid Link Removed falls from the sky in a common orientation. These Invalid Link Removed like millions of miniature ice mirrors, with external and internal reflections from different faces creating [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] of different radii. An Invalid Link Removed of pyramid ice crystal halos was captured on June 5 above Tampere, Finland. Visible above are Invalid Link Removed of 9, 18, 20, 23, and 24 degrees. In contrast, thin and flat falling ice crystals will Invalid Link Removed of Invalid Link Removed only. The high clouds containing the ice crystals are faintly visible, as are some Invalid Link Removed. The usual Sun image was covered behind a light post, and the above image was significantly digitally sharpened. It is not currently known how large areas of nearly uniform pyramidal ice crystals form.

Explanation: What's happening over the horizon? Although the scene may appear somehow supernatural, nothing more unusual is occurring than a Invalid Link Removed and some well placed clouds. Strangely, the actual sunset was occurring in the opposite direction from where the camera was pointing. Pictured above are Link Removed. To understand them, start by picturing common [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] that are seen any time that sunlight pours though scattered clouds. Now although sunlight indeed travels along [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], the projections of these lines onto the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] are great circles. Therefore, the crepuscular rays from a Invalid Link Removed will appear to re-converge on the other side of the sky. At the anti-solar point 180 degrees around from the Invalid Link Removed, they are referred to as Link Removed. While enjoying the sunset after visiting NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the photographer chanced to find that an even more spectacular sight was occurring in the other direction just over the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] -- a particularly vivid set of [Invalid or Expired Link Removed].
