ambient mic for IEMs

I have a behringer omni ECM8000 RTA mic that might work well. I will have to feed it phantom power.

The ECM 8000 is a small diaphragm omni-directional condenser.
It's not a great mic, but it is the perfect type of mic for the task you describe.
It has some self-noise and can distort if overdriven. Before you buy anything you should give it a test.

with Nerve, only Jojo wears IEM's, and we set up an additional SM58 at head level towards the back of the stage. He has his own mixer for his IEM's, and it seems to work fine for him. I'm contemplating the move to IEM's, but I think I'd want something stereo and more natural.

The only things keeping me away from IEM's is the cost of building a really good monitor rig for touring (not gonna count on different consoles and monitor engineers with speakers a few cm from my eardrums) and my (rational) fear of hearing damage... any speakers in your ear canal are potentially super damaging, even if the volume 'seems' ok, and as a recording engineer, that **** freaks me out.

Would you say that in the perfect case you would hear everything through your IEMs sounding the same as if you weren't wearing them?
