Nothing against him, his choice his career his marketing plan.
Gotta make some $$ I totally get it.
But it’s a form of « elitism » and I get turned off by the lack of access to artistic knowledge and ressources based on one’s revenue.
Like that « bull$i$$@« Wu tang unique album that cost like millions

Piccolo strings have been installed on my Nordy Cat short scale. I need to adjust the action and probably need to have the nut replaced if this becomes a permanent arrangement. However, I’m pretty happy with the initial experience. I definitely started playing more guitar-like lines, and the unwrapped G string is taking some time to adapt to, but overall I think this will be a nice change. Part of me is already wondering about converting one of my 5 strings to a piccolo. Or better yet… buying another 5 just for this purpose :)

I am surprised there isn’t a simultaneous digital release. But he’s old so who knows what he thinks he’s doing.

Spent some HS time today and am learning it around. I also went through a bunch of presets, most of which are either cheese to my ears or utility for what I imagine they imagine gigging keyboardists need, but it was interesting to see happy Darcy programmed macros and modulations. A lot of the ones I liked best were relatively simple.

I also set up a bunch of wavetables for wave scanning, just to learn how it’s done. I still think I prefer waveshaping to sweeping wavetables. But some of the waves are cool.

@steubig your LFO 5 tip is excellent.

My earliest experiments with piccolo bass were using a short-scale instrument (Gibson EB-0) and the stock D'Addario piccolo string set with the unwound G string. And those experiments were rather ungratifying...mostly (I contend) because it no longer felt like a bass.

That all changed when I started experimenting with piccolo bass using a long-scale instrument (Steinberger L-2) and cobbling together string sets a la carte so I could have a wound G string. Suddenly it felt like a bass...just sounded higher!

Mangan makes a 5 string set with a wound G at 25. I’ve started considering that set and either setting it up on a 5, just using 4 strings for an EADG bass, or just using the 4 lowest for BEAD. Mangan also offers custom sets so I could work with him to create something.

interesting.

i kind of like how the plain strings feel and sound. definitely get different things out of them and they really bring something new to fretless.

that being said, they're challenging to me because they respond differently to the force i normally apply to thicker/wound bass strings.

i'm finding that my baritones (which are probably really piccolo 6-string basses) require and encourage different vocabularies (and some extensions of my already-existent vocabularies).

it's an interesting process.
