Got my order in in the first minute, but a half hour later it's not sold out yet so WR seems to be doing a lot better with their releases.

I'm looking forward to scanning through outputs of Just Friends, QPAS, Spectraphon, Zorlon etc. with it as well as feedback patching experiments, and scanning through different LFOs (maybe even different sequences) and other stuff.

Coming up with my not-really-resolutions for 2025. "Buy nothing" isn't one of them but I do expect not to pick up nearly as much music gear.

Another one made while cooped up at Mom's house over Christmas. Whenever I travel, I usually carry a small "synth kit" with a Volca Synth, a Zoom multieffects pedal, and my stereo recorder. Maybe a few other battery-powered goodies, depending. Shoot some photos and video with my phone, and get busy for a few hours. Fairly low effort, but the videos are free, so get what you pay for and so on, I guess.

Wish I brought my travel bass when with my wife’s family this Xmas but they are kind of….hmmmm

My "stuff" is not nearly as sophisticated as most/all of all y'all's music. Just some late night stream of unconsciousness ramblings, really. All of these are a single bass into a Strymon Flint and occasionally a Sansamp GT2, single track straight through, no overdubs or multiple tracks. Not too shabby when one is half asleep! 😴 ;)

A few more. The basses played for these tracks include a Rickenbacker 4004L SPC, Martin Keith Elfin 5, and a Martin Keith fretless Elfin 5.

I use a Korg SR-1 "Sound on Sound". It's a handheld recorder which you can overlay multiple tracks on, one at a time, until the memory card is full. Has internal condenser mics so you can record band practice as well as guitar-in and line-in. I liked it so much that when I had to get it repaired I bought a second one as a backup, because, unfortunately, Korg discontinued it. :( My only gripe with it is that's not as sturdily constructed as I think it needs to be. I bought a small hardshell case that fits it so I can protect it when I travel with it, and I have to be careful at band practice or gigs with it so it doesn't get dropped or kicked around. But it's been a very useful piece of gear for the last decade or so.

For recording at home, I have a Tascam DP-03SD 8-track digital recorder. This allows mixing and rudimentary mastering, similar to an 8-track tape deck. It also had condenser mics and is technically portable, but it doesn't run on batteries, wall power only, so can't take it out to the park in a backpack.

If I wanted portable and battery-powered today I'm not sure where I would start. Sony still makes some good ones I think, but I haven't been on the market in several years now.

I use a Zoom H5 and love it. Used a Zoom H4 for years before that and never had any issues either. You can use it either as a stereo field recorder or as a multitrack recorder and the included mics are great- I used to record my too loud metal band’s practices in our rehearsal space with the H4’s built-in mics and they actually sounded great with minimal fuss, even the bass (I also have a few of the additional mics for my Zoom H5).

I always think about bringing it along on hikes and to other places to make stereo field recordings, but usually forget to! I used to get some good show recordings with the H4 but they are slightly bulky to pocket into a venue and I don’t necessarily want to sneak record anymore anyway (minidiscs we’re great for that). I should at least bring it to my band’s gigs and grab recordings via mic or from the soundboard.

I used to make a lot of binaural field recordings with Minidisc recorders and ear-worn stereo many years ago while taking hikes or bike rides, etc. Sadly I lost my whole case of recorded Minidiscs from my car (many, many hours of recordings) and had never transferred them to a computer! I always loved the stereo image of walking across a mountain stream or similar and had plans to start adding them into musical pieces but never got around to it before I lost them all. I definitely need to pick up a set of those little binaural earset mics again for my Zoom H5!

I have a Zoom H6 and love it. Can just use a stereo mic capsule (mine came with two, I think the new ones only come with one), but have 4 additional inputs for flexibility. With a trio I would put the stereo mic on the drums, then kick guitar & bass on their own channels. Dump into ProTools (or now Reaper for me) to have fun mixing. Can record as mp3 or WAV (various resolutions). Can also be used as an audio interface.

Looks like the H4 & H6 have been discontinued, now they have the H5 that @sunbeast has and H8, as well as other versions: Handheld Recorders

Just dropping in to say hi and happy new year to all the regulars. Been dealing with a change of state in my cancer which has cut into my music and internet time (and everything else time). I'm in a watch-and-wait phase with some new meds at the moment, which are their own adventure.

Hoping to visit more on the regular in 2025.
