Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Not saying this won’t be changed a lot for a long time... but in my state in Aus we had 0 new cases for past few days... probably won’t change everything but at least hopefully relax enough by end of May that getting together for band mates won’t mean cops called and fines issues for violating isolation stuff...
agree though all this will be a very long haul. :(
But that’s more time for us to get time out to create stuff right?? And talk over hexadecimal :)

Hahaha.... that was awesome...

I consider myself a pretty big tool fan, but not “those types” and don’t consider Maynard a god... the other three maybe hah!
I did find it funny that when I went to the lateralus tour way back when, there were so many different types of people rocking up... nerds and jocks / meat heads, teeny boppers, people in their 50’s and 60’s... and ally said Maynard put on a good show! so I guess Maynards charisma must have something to let him get away with how he acts! Not many people can pull off a blue and orange polka dot hiding in the shadows and still make people like them lol

I use the SP404sx isolator FX to that exact application.
Not as surgical as the ones in the video though, They sound Freakin awesome. I really like the way he routed so he can add feedback and self resonnation. That’s why analog mixers are awesome, you never think of patching stuff like that in a DAW, even if it is very possible.

Side note, just the connectors are giving me a headache, soooooo much stuff is needed to make everything work.

Edit: he uses a Juno in the video that made me remember about this cool little free plugin.

Its basically the Juno chorus module only as a stand alone effect. Very simple are very cool imo.

It’s odd that given the realm of options 4/4 is “the” dance beat for so much music.

The argument I've heard -- not that I buy it for one nanosecond, but just mentioning that you'll often hear folks parrot this old chestnut -- is that the reason dance music is in 4/4 is because our heart beats in 4/4

...which it doesn't, but nobody ever seems to let facts get in the way of a good tirade. Some otherwise respectable musicians have trotted that line out. I think the first time I heard it was in a quote by drummer Ginger Baker!

Language and concepts are interesting. I’m sure it’s been beaten up before, but...
What if someone wrote in a piece 5/5. The whole note terminology makes sense, but a literal “quarter” note would not. But nobody is going to call it a “fifth” note. If you did there’d be a can of worms opened up for needing notation and naming to match the actual subdivisions. Just calling any one-beat-duration a “quarter” certainly simplifies things.

Did the language evolve to match the actuality or did the actuality develop because of the language?

i’m thinking 4/4 because two legs. walking is sorta 2/4.

but, isn’t balkan dance music in other time signatures?

and then there are waltzes, etc.

Right. People like repetitive patterns for dancing. You can’t do that as easily with an odd subdivision. If you did have an odd pattern, folks would probably double it to make it even.

I’m just going to start writing in 1/1 time.
