Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

What would be the (hypothetical) difference between a piece in 5/5, and a piece in 4/4 where every measure is subdivided into quarter-note quintuplets or subdivisions thereof?

I’m not fancy enough to know. I’m assuming a composer would have an easier time. It might influence the performers’ phrasing, particularly to emphasize every 5th beat as the start of a measure vs a changing location in 4/4 measure. As a reader, I’d think it would be easier to comprehend the pattern as a 5 subdivision.

Thinking aloud, another angle about my previous question: What's the difference between a piece in 4/4 where every measure is subdivided into quarter-note quintuplets or subdivisions thereof, and a piece in 4/4 [edit: oops, I mean 5/4] that's notated more conventionally and is simply played at a 20% faster tempo?

On a completely unrelated note: After 7 or 8 months I have finally found another setting on the Chase Bliss MOOD that I'm (almost) willing to commit to one of the preset memory slots! It's a combination of reverb (albeit dialed down so it's more of an asymmetrical/arrhythmic cluster of delays) plus alternating the looping side between Env mode (for very subtle cloud regeneration) and Tape mode (for 8va swirling bee swarms). Really handy for turning chords into hazy ambient washes that evolve subtly without sounding too abnormal.

7 or 8 months for one preset.
You sir, are a very patient man.

did you mean 5/4? 4ters in 5/4 would be way easier to read.

if you mean 4/4, is there a stress on the first note of the five-note phrase? is so, doing it in 4/4 would be harder to read. (where x = the stressed note in the phrase)

|:[ x-2-3-4 || 1-x-3-4 || 1-2-x-4 || 1-2-3-x || 1-2-3-4 ]:|

to me, it all depends on what else is going—is *everything* in the whole piece (based on) a unison quintuplet? if so, i'd go to 5/4.

at the risk of this becoming an Adam Neely sub, this seems relevant

Adam Neely the Third on the possible relationship between spoken language and music

this totally makes sense to me, as i've thought about this for a while—especially when i've listened to italian/english/german/french classical music, i feel like the language drives the melodies. (i'd even go so far to say that it's possible that our language and syntax influence how we perceive the world.)

as an aside, i once read an interview in downbeat where a saxophonist said he practiced along to soap operas because he was trying to get a more vocal/linguistic slant on his playing. (unfortunately, i don't remember his exact words.) it can be a fun exercise.

any chance of a sound sample and/or pics of settings? always curious about getting new sounds out of my Mood

You may be an old head, but you're not the arbiter of rap
I never claimed to be the arbiter of anything.
It was just IMO.
Old head....mmmkay.....maybe. I have thick skin and am the first to take self depricating jokes but.....

I will calmly step out of this clear attempt to antagonize me. But comparing post malone to kool g rap is like comapring kenny g to charlie parker.

I wish you all the best in your musical journey my friend.
Stay safe and take care of the ones close to you.

good social distancing time.

this gets me to the place where i often think that notation has very little to do with music. consider that thousands of years of music/musicians never relied on notation, it's a purely aural tradition—and still is in a lot of cultures.

dunno if it's some weird western european control/organization thing or the composer is god thing . . .

and, of course, it's if you want to tell other people what to play . . . if you're just doing electronic/tape/computer pieces or all improv, you don't really need that. not sure that musicians in hill villages in the balkans care about this sort of thing.

musing . . .

I had no intention to antagonize you, I just meant it in the sense of your preferring an older era of rap to the current crop of rap. Which I'm not a fan of either a lot of the time, but that doesn't stop them from being rappers. Hope you stay safe and well.

Oh, geez, duh... Sorry, yes, that's what I was thinking: What's the difference between a piece in 4/4 where every measure is subdivided into quarter-note quintuplets or subdivisions thereof, and a piece in 5/4 that's notated more conventionally and is simply played at a 20% faster tempo?

Good eye.

On the one hand, I've been telling myself that this quarantine is the perfect opportunity to get the home recording studio back into action; it's been in a state of disarray for way too long.
On the other hand...don't hold yer breath! So maybe I'll record some snippets on my iPhone.

and, of course, it's if you want to tell other people what to play . . .

My favorite quote about that very subject comes from a dissertation on composition versus improvisation by Arthor Weinstein (who now goes by the name Frank Arthor Drake) in the liner notes for some Rastascan Records compilation.

He said "Telling people what to do is its own reward."

:)

since there are not a whole lot of gig opportunities these days (and may not be for quite a while), unless you count people doing web concerts, i think this is the perfect time to do small-scale recordings. maybe look at them as a more permanent gig. dunno.

:D

yeah. i guess. negotiating different player egos and insecurities makes that less palatable at times.
