The sequel is awesome. I saw it three times in the theater even as others were ignoring it. Last show I had the whole room to myself. Great eye candy and great soundtrack.

Story I heard is that Johann Johannsson was supposed to do the soundtrack but for some reason he left the project early on and Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch took over. There is a certain sound in the music during a chase scene that almost sounds like a weird motorcycle or something, and it cranks up the drama level. The ambient pieces fit the whole dreamy, dreary, rainy cyberpunk feel of the film perfectly and have been made into hours-long loops on youtube. I can watch and listen to both these films over and over again.

I was always "scared" to see the sequel.
I may give it a chance....cuz of you.

Side note: I blame you for my pladask reverb envy.......WOW!!!!!!

Side note 2:
Spent the day yesterday choosing classic hip hop beats to do a medley for live drums and bass. On the instrumental side....everything is good.
But now I gotta chop up samples for something in the background since its only drums and bass. Train wreck waiting to happen, very time consuming, especially if the end result of hours of cut chop paste ends up sucking b@llz.

I’m in the minority here...Blade Runner is one of my very favorite movies. The sequel? Looks like and sounds amazing, but I just don’t think it quite lives up to the original. Maybe I should try watching it again sometime :)

Although I found it visually stunning on all levels, I thought the pacing was a bit too slow, and didn't find it something I'd watch again. I ended up coming away with the feeling that it just didn't need to be made.... the original story was good enough.

My exact thoughts. Guess I’m less in the minority than I thought :)

The box office performance would put you in the majority, but then again, the first film did poorly as well, so who knows.

I do wish they had got Vangelis to work with the soundtrack, though I think not letting Ridley Scott direct it was a good move. His latest work with the Alien franchise has been awful IMO. It's like he lost his mojo or something, his older films are all killer.

box office: i guess. but as you say, the first was a bomb. this one underperformed, i couldn’t find any numbers for home video/streaming income.

i kind of like prometheus, et al. i do wish they’d make a third. it’s possibly a better “thought movie” than a movie.

scott has always been a bit hit or miss for me.

oh, scott thought it was too long. not a problem for me.

I'm kinda indifferent to the whole Blade Runner phenom, and I turned off the sequel halfway into it (like, before Harrison Ford even showed up!) ...but I loved Prometheus specifically because while it was flawed as a film per se it really did make you think. A lot. So I totally get this idea of “thought movie”. We need more of 'em.

well you're just wrong. ;)

seriously, i think br 2049 is a "thought movie"—it has lots of different nuggets of consciousness/freedom and then also some interesting takes on a very harsh future. so . . . i'd say it might be worth revisiting.

I have to admit, when BR49 came to theaters I was on a cyberpunk reading bender. William Gibson, and of course, the creator of the Blade Runner universe, Philip K. Dick. Plus I was listening to a lot of late 70s and early 80s post punk, which for some reason in my mind is oddly tied to cyberpunk thematically, think Gary Numan. So that particular film came to me at just the right time for me to really dig it. The sweet soundtrack is icing on the cake.

Blade runner is definitely a “thought” movie.
It’s impact as a classic is undeniable.

But if you dont like the flick, its ok......plenty more good stuff out there.

I really like it, but it’s not one I have watched 50 times.
Didn’t even see the sequel by shear fear of it sucking b@llz
