Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I have to admit, when BR49 came to theaters I was on a cyberpunk reading bender. William Gibson, and of course, the creator of the Blade Runner universe, Philip K. Dick. Plus I was listening to a lot of late 70s and early 80s post punk, which for some reason in my mind is oddly tied to cyberpunk thematically, think Gary Numan. So that particular film came to me at just the right time for me to really dig it. The sweet soundtrack is icing on the cake.

love gibson (though the peripheral left me a bit cold). read everything of his at least twice. (you might like cory doctorow.)

i always thought skinny puppy would've been the perfect soundtrack (unlike andy summers, who was pitched when they were gonna do a neuromancer movie).

in fact, i did a bunch of pieces based on this short stories in burning chrome:

Blade runner is definitely a “thought” movie.
It’s impact as a classic is undeniable.

But if you dont like the flick, its ok......plenty more good stuff out there.

I really like it, but it’s not one I have watched 50 times.

Yessir, it’s Denis Villeneuve.
His movie “Incendies” is a troubling masterpiece.
He directed and co-wrote that one.

You would definitely remember that one if you had seen it.
It’s sorta of a post war drama......

I use to watch at least 1 movie a day. Was getting into a lot of international stuff since I had seen so many “local” movies.

......now.....
I fall asleep after 20 mins, I have to watch em in slices.

Tonight I broke out the old school OG hip hop set up to build up the drum n bass medley.
Been a while, I missed playing this stuff a lot I just realized.

btw, all the sounds on that are ipad sounds.

i loved the idoru stuff (seems like the virtual pop star is *here*). the blue ant series is pretty good, you might wantnot give it a go.

I liked alien/s etc... Prometheus cold have been good but still feel like it left a bad taste in the mouth with evil androids as the bad guy. Though I guess the idea is weyland yutani are the bad guys which they always were...

did love all the music of BR and aliens etc
I kind of look at it like Star Wars prequels... explains a lot of back story with some cool elements and some Really bad ones too.

On another nerd note, found this tastefully done ... considering how many times I watched the opening instrumental I’m quite a critic!

It’s strange to me that there isn’t more buzz about this synth. I think it sounds exceptional and it’s really fun to program. They came up with a way for FM to make sense. This video someone did has been really helpful to me. It’s kind of long, but this guy makes all the sounds up one at a time, very quickly and visually, it gives an indication of what you’re dealing with

Working on a few things with this track:
I forced myself to bounce the tracks to audio sooner than I normally would have.
I forced myself to avoid layering synth sounds
I worked on automations in Ableton.
I played with more bouncing/panning/width than I usually do.

I learned the bass line on my short scale, but I programmed it using Form in Reaktor. It was a decent amount of preset sampling and sound design to find something I felt fit what I heard in my head. I was listening to dark minimal EDM stuff and I liked the space and the "ambience" created by panning effects. I didn't get what I hoped for out of it, but I did learn some things and I'm satisfied with it. I think I overcooked the compression, but I did't feel like burning more time on the track. I was initially getting some extreme changes when I layered on the mix glue and mastering plugins. After a few rounds of adjustments, I got it close enough for my goals with this project.

Cool track! The compression is a bit heavy handed but it still sounds cool

DS9 had one of the best storylines and character development of all the Star trek series.

Shame they ruined the series ending with the last....hmmm 3-4 episodes.

Wow, that FM synth sounds Effin dope.
Everything you pump out of that is rich and textured and...(insert another meaningless work to describe sound,,,,)
Unfortunately I dont have a mono ishh box anymore......I’d like to hear it through that.......glorious mono.
