The band I'm in was fortunate enough to play a Mardi Gras ball/extravaganza w/ EW+F on the bill as the headliner (We played after them in the graveyard slot - something like 2-3am - so of course we joked that EW+F "opened" for us). We were so fired up to see them, but their show wasn't the best, just bad song selection, with extended percussion solos, etc. - and all everyone wanted to do was dance to their hits. I was sidestage from where Verdine was, and it was hard to tell how much of the playing was live, or possibly pre-recorded or covered by keyboards. Don't get me wrong, the guy is unreal and their catalog of songs backs that up, it was just a downer to be so fired up about something and have it miss the mark. His look is, well, interesting!

I have a Kool & The Gang DVD at the House of Blues. They're playing.

Yeah ok, I think I had chosen the wrong words, it's not really like the whole music is coming from tape, but it's supported by sequencers and stuff like that. I once saw Kool And The Gang live on TV, and although there was a guy with a bass guitar on stage the bass lines were definitely keyboard ones!

Yeah, I thought so too! He dances around way too much to be able to play so tightly. Plus his left hand barely moves on the neck!! And that's even at least 10 years ago. I have a DVD of EW&F in Japan and he just can't be dancing around like that and playing too.

The guy with the bass onstage was Kool

Some of their songs have keyboard bass lines. On the DVD I have he's playing, the two drummers are playing, the 3+3 horn section is playing, the 3 guitarists are playing, the keyboardists are player... and the singers are singing. When Kool played a solo it was obviously live.

I have no idea what's up with EWF, I've been disappointed with their performances over the last few years, I have no idea why they don't just play. OTOH bands like Kool & the Gang, The GAP Band, AWB, Cameo, etc. still sound great and they're playing live.

I'm not saying they never play to tracks (I don't know), I'm saying that on this DVD there's obviously no need, they (K&TG) were seriously kicking it live. Best I've ever heard them sound.

A few years ago, HBO used to have Sinbad's Old School funk specials every summer....with Gap band, Teena Marie etc. All of them had kick ass live bands, with kick ass bassplayers....I miss that show

I remember those, Sinbads Summer Jams or something like that. Very good show with lots of great music. They should air those again. Maybe if enough people email HBO and request it they'll air them again.

randy jackson has had quite the career in the early 80's he toured around california with jerry garcia and bob weir i am not sure what they called themselves but they played mostly benefit concerts
