Amp Comparrisons - Woods, Eden, GB

I'm in the process of updating my rig. I just bought a pair of Baer ML112s hoping to use one instead of my EA VL110 and Bag End 115 setup (so far so good) and both to replace my Eden 410.

Having done that, I'm now looking at whether to change my amp setup.

I currently have a Walter Woods 1200w head and an Eden WT800. The Genz Benz Shuttlemax 9.2 is looking awfully tempting as a replacement for both these amps. However, I haven't played with the GB and have only listened to Ed's video review of the max (which makes it seem pretty awesome).

I'm looking for something pretty versatile. I'm currently playing mostly electric, both fretted and fretless, but have gone long stints only playing upright or electric upright. The WW has been a phenomenal amp up to now and I love the Eden, but the ability to have both Tube and FET tones available on a gig seems pretty amazing, especially with the light weight factor of the GB.

Any thoughts?

Hey David, glad to hear the cabs are working for you. I'm not sure if it has enough power for you , but if you like Eden, the WT550 has always been one of my all time favorite amps. The WT550 and the Mesa Walkabout are still my favorite "micro" heads. In fact, probably the best rig I ever had was a SWR Interstellar Overdrive run straight into the input of a WT550. That rig was amazing! My guess is that a WT550 into two ML112's would be pretty darn loud.

Donner Cruz,

After looking around for a long time, I'm sticking with my Walter Woods MI-400-8 and Woods Ultra as my main amplifiers. The older MI series used FET's in their circuitry. They are a very warm sounding amplifier. I'm perfectly happy with the Woods Ultra, but the MI-400-8 is my amp of choice.

Genz Benz,
Genz Benz get's high praise and compared with the price of either a used MI-400-8 or your Ultra, it's far less money.
I've only played through a Shuttle 3.0 10T it's a nice compact amplifier. I fear that you might not be able to combine the features of the Woods and Eden into one amp.

Hey Roger,

So far, so good on the cabs. Played a bit at home, which isn't really a fair test. Had one rehearsal last weekend and it took a while to dial them in, but once I did, it sounded great. Rehearsing again Saturday and a gig next Wednesday, so then I'll have some real feedback.

On the amp subject, I'm really not unhappy with either amp. The weight on the WW is great and I love the sound. The tube sound on the Eden is great, but it is a heavy beast (comparatively) and a lighter rig to go both ways is intriguing.

As happy as I am with my Genz 9.0, I would have to say it has a different upper mid-high tone then either the WW or the Eden. I think the Streamliner 900 would be a great match with the ML112's. The 9.2 would be a close second due to the eq options. You could dial in Chicago on that amp.

GAS can be a terrible thing. Keep the WW amp, you will probably regret selling it, is my guess.

I love my Super, it has sounded great with any cab I have paired it with.
