Companies learn who "rents" and they track you. You'll see.
If your ethics aren't there then don't complain when you get spanked. You will find that they have ways of legally changing their policies just on you.
I can speak on this because I don't want to pay higher prices because you're being slick.

These old amps (my Peavey and Hartke) are serious workhorses! And I've had both of them in the shop (highly reputable amp repair geek) in the last 10 months! It seems maybe they don't want to play nice with me

i second jasonbraatz's suggestion. go buy some crazy awesome amp from guitar center and return it the next day for a full cash refund no questions asked. I do that all the time! took a moogerfooger clusterflux to a recording session a few times. aswell as "renting" a moog voyager for free. gigged an ampeg 8X10 that way too, i took it on a two week mini tour and was super careful with it (duct tape on the casters always had it covered unless i was playing etc.) brought it back as soon as I got home for a full refund no questions asked. Ive done it countless times with almost every boutique pedal they have at the manhattan guitar center and they don't even really seem to mind much.

You might want to spend a couple bucks on an outlet tester to make sure the outlet wiring isn't killing your equipment?

Although these amps failed in different buildings, that's still a good suggestion.

I figure no harm no foul. it is usually things that I would like to buy, but want to try out in practical applications first. everything goes back exactly as it was given to me no nicks or broken anything. there are a few pedals that i have actually ended up keeping, and it is how i ended up with my current cab. but regardless I think guitar center is doing just fine so it doesn't bother me much at all.

Remind me never to go to a GC near you to buy anything. Not only is that dishonest, but it puts other consumers in the position of possibly buying used gear sold as new. May the bass gods show you no mercy on judgement day.

I absolutely don't think you should make a habit of it, but if you're REALLY in a pinch I don't see the harm in it. If you want something that's brand new in box from GC do due diligence yourself and make sure what you're buying is actually brand new.

I think what's being said is some people ARE making a habit of it. I've bought stuff from GC that didn't work out or I didn't like and returned it, but I've never bought something because I "needed" it for a gig knowing that I was gonna return it the next day. That just doesn't seem right...

Meh. I wouldn't play the renting game because it is unethical, you would eventually be caught out but mostly because you're utterly humped if someone 'beers' the amp.

But this is still a silly thing to say. Every amp on the floor has had at least one sillyhead playing through it. That's why you never accept ticket price on floor stock.

I feel bad for the OP. Last time I got the gear plague I nearly gave up playing.
