I can't help to wonder the same thing with the GK. They sure want you to open wide for a markbass lol.

Just keep in mind guys can play very well but still be clueless with equipment. Example hooking up two 4 ohm cabs to an amp that is only rated for one 4 ohm cab (two 4 ohm cabs make a 2 ohm load).
I like the second post here: we can give you all the advise we want but you'll probably find your sound through experimenting with different amps in LA. iN the event that you're looking for a good fit for your purpose without trying before buying, I really like the tecamp puma or a preamp/poweramp combo.
Check out fender rumble, orange terror bass (both small amps with big power) or if is your style orange just came out with the OB1 amps that are nice growly sounding with a footswitchable OD/Fuzz channel.
As far as a whole rig make sure your checking out cabs at the same time and looking for what suits your tastes and needs. The market is very diverse with plenty of options, and talkbass is full of knowledgeable and experienced ladies and gents to talk to!

These "Players" in your town do not know what they are doing if they are going through amps like that. The two DOAs at GC where probably hooked up wrong also.
They might have a lot of misinformation. Listen to the Players on Talk Bass, read the link below and get a proper education, so you do not end up going through amps like the others in your area. Have fun with your new amp search.

From what you describe, I'd grab a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 or 9.2 from the classifieds here, and then focus on your cabinets.
Some guitar center drone probably plugged two amps into the same cab expecting that as long as the amp not being played is off, the AB switch could be safely used to hock Marshalls on the guitar floor.
When you say big outdoor gigs, I assume you mean a touring band.
Agree with Zuberwerx; a pre, power amp, and speakers that are a good match, or an SVT, or a big GK.
Thinks about this, these 3 scenarios make up 95% of the rock, blues, country, & pop bands that play large venues for the last 10 years.

If you are in the mood to go tüb, then Mesa just released some new tube heads last year, and Ampeg's venerable SVT is always an option. The new Fender Bassman heads are getting some good reviews too.

I'm running power amps with preamps these days (Tech 21 RPM, VT Bass Deluxe, Presonus studio channel, ART TubePAC/TubeEQ etc)
Listening to your requirements, if I were to recommend a traditional Amp, it would be Sunn 1200s. 2 channel, switchable eq, dual band compression, power for days.Loved mine.
Non traditional, I'd be running a Zoom B3 into a power amp.Amp sims, eq, compressor. Anything you need for the sounds you are chasing. Search for the thread, Zoom B3 as a preamp.
