Amp head suggestions

Stevos is looking to downsize in weight a bit and would like some suggestions from the members of this forum for an AMP head. I gotta say in the short time I’ve been here, I’ve learned a bunch from everyone’s input on the various threads.

Although my speaker cab issue has been resolved as I’ve pulled the trigger on a Glasstone “Lil G”, I currently have;

2 X 15 horn cab which is homebuilt from an Altec-Lansing design (from a print, 4-ohm, horns are low) using two Sunn Tranducers from the late 70’s era (when I built it). It’s ugly, but glued and screwed with “real” A-D 3/4” plywood (also from the era) and doesn’t rattle. Weighs a ton......And an Ampeg SVT-410HE cab which does wonderful but weighs 91pounds!

My AMP is an Acoustic 140 head I bought new in `77. It’ll drive everything above but it is big and heavy with no direct out due to the era.

Stevos is north of 60 and the “91 pounds”, “weighs a ton”, and “heavy” mentioned above make a difference. I play church and secular gigs (jazz/rock/blues) with a M/Man 5string Stingray, Ric 4003 (1990) and a `77 Gibson T/bird. Back in the day I played a Gibson EB-3L because that’s what Andy Fraser played!

I’m leaning toward a Ampeg PF500, GK MB500, a Kustom KXB500 and anything else anyone can throw up there to look at as I've been out the market for a while.

Much thanks for your help!

I've been extremely happy with my Kustom KXB500. When you factor in the 500w (@ 4 ohms) performance, 5 lb. weight, five year warranty, abundance of well thought out features and the well under $400 price new... wow. And it sounds really good too. It's the amp I recommend these days.

I used an Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 for awhile and it could drive just about anything. If you like the vintage type tone it really gives that fat tube tone that Aguilar is known for... and under 10 pounds it will certainly save the back. I only got rid of mine because I decided I was too young(under 30) for a micro head and should lug something larger.

You want light weight...... check out a Carvin BX500. 500 watts at 4 Ohms or 2 Ohms, 300 Watts at 8 Ohms, DI out and only weighs around 6 lbs. It can be had all day long for $350 from Carvin.
