Ampeg 410he, 610hlf, or 212av...

Hey all!! Currently have a 410he with my V4B Reissue. I'm planning to add an SVT to the mix for larger gigs and wondering which cab you would suggest. 212AV, 610HLF, or add something like a 1x15 under the 410he. Playing hard rock and melodic punk rock. Keeping it Ampeg, and NOT going 8x10.

I've got a V4B and a 410he at my rehearsal space. For giggles, I did try it with my SVT 610hlf, and ended up with way too much volume, with the gain and master so low that the lower headroom was a non-factor. IMO, those tube head sound best when opened up. Unless you're playing outside, a 300 watt SVT just isn't gonna grind with that many speakers.

My experience with the 610HLF is that if you like the tight low end and gradual bass roll off of the 410HE, you will not find the 610HLF anything like it. It's massive sounding and cool, but not at all like the sealed boxes.

I second the suggestion to get another 410HE if you are happy with it and just want more.

Awesome responses! Thank you!! I love my 410he as I feel like the sealed cabs offer a tone a little more "true" to an 8x10. I just wish I could run an SVT through my 410he! Damn 8 ohms hahaha!

Bergantino NV610 is the cab ampeg should make for this purpose, but doesn’t. Sealed 610. Sounds amazing with a v4b reissue. Of these choices id stick with the 410he and add PA support.

Jimmy with another CLUTCH response! Always good to hear from you sir, I may just give it a try! The V4BRI is a killer bass amp, but once you've stood in front of an SVT there are few things like it!

To clarify -- you don't want a single 810 or don't want to add another 410he to the equation? I think adding another 410he would be the optimal to maximize the most out of an SVT.

I'm in agreement here. I see a lot of Ampeg HLF cabs as part of venue/rehearsal space equipment. The HLF cabs needs considerable amounts of power and EQ to get the most out of them. As to why Ampeg didn't make a 610he is befuddling.

Ok it's down to either a 610hlf or adding a second 410he. Given I could run an SVT on a 410he safely...if Jimmy says so, with ampeg, it IS so....

Yes it is strange why Ampeg does not offer closed 610. Another strange thing is why they have not modernized their existing offering, like lighter 810, 610 and 410. It should be doable while maintaining the Ampeg sound.

Adding another 410e sounds like the best idea to me, nothing like eight 10"s with an SVT head.

You lose about 100 watts in the process though. I did it for a while unknowing and it just didn't sound right and broke up. My guitarist complained about it and said there's something wrong with your amp and he was right. I had cut an 810 in half and plugged them both into the two speaker jacks which presented a 4 ohm load to the 2 ohm tap (70's SVT's have no impedance switch, they switch automatically when you plug the second cab in). Once I bought a two to one Rat Shack adaptor and plugged them both into the main output it sounded a lot better and a lot louder.
I read his reply and I don't know this but I always assumed he just meant that they wouldn't blow up with a mismatch because they definitely don't sound right.

I would agree with the sound although it’s by comparison to running one at proper impedance. Compared to other amps, it still kicks ass . I’ve done it many times before and never had a problem.

Oh yeah, I had joined a hard rock band with a really loud drummer, I hadn't noticed it before that, I just realized when I had to crank it. I used to use a head with an 8 ohm B-15 cab too for small rooms and it sounded great.

I love the 610hlf and 410hlf, tons of low end but I'd rather have it and tame it with a HPF as opposed to not have the low end and have the speaker fart out on my low notes. I think the 212av would be my pick due to the size, weight, and sound.

So....tried out a 610hlf at rehearsal with the band. V4BRI sounded like a whole different MONSTER through that cab. WOW....

I have the 610hlf & 410he (2). I seem to prefer the 610 (with a HPF) by a nose. I Have the Classic & Pro7.

Oh yeah. I would say, this sounds just as good as the 610. I would totally do another 410HE were I the OP. Whatever you do, not the 610HLF. Anything but the HLF. I'm not sure how it would work out ohms wise on the 210HE with a 410HE.
