Ampeg 610

I just picked up an Ampeg 610 earlier today and after playing it for the last couple hours, I must say I'm in love with it! It could just be that I'm drunk on getting new gear, but it's really able to push out a lot of low's and high's that I need to achieve the tone I want.

I have a rehearsal with my indie rock band tomorrow, and two gigs this weekend. One at a house show (which I'm really excited about!) and the other at a medium sized venue.

Im deciding to write about it since I haven't been able to really find ANYTHING online about the 610. One or two threads here in TB, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to write another in case anyone is on the fence about going with either a 610 or 810.

The 610 is different than the 810 more than the obvious two less speakers. There is a horn that you can adjust its attenuation on the back of the cab. Also these speakers are NOT sealed, unlike the 810 which is essentially 4 sets of 2 sealed 10 inch speakers. However, the 610 does have bass ports located near the bottom of the cab. So with the ports and the horn the 610 has a lower AND a higher frequency response than the 810.

Not to mention the size! When I'm on the road with my band it doesn't matter how big or small of gear we have, there is plenty of room to store it all. However when I'm home and gigging around town, a large Ampeg Fridge could be burdensome. The 610 is able to fit comfortably in the back seat of my Nissan Versa!

Anyways, I'll return after my gigs this weekend and let anyone who is interested know how I feel about the 610 after a live setting playthrough.

I wasn't a fan of this cab, but since they started making them outside the US, I now like it. I've played it a bunch of times at my former band mate's rehearsal space and have used it in backlines. IMO the Asian 610HLF & the 410HE (with horn off of course) are the cabs that sound closest to the 810E.

I had a full band rehearsal with this last night and it KILLED. What I notice the most is how much my high frequencies really sang through in the mix, not too overpowering, just enough to hear it all with the full band still rocking in front of it. I'm still working on dialing in a tone that I enjoy, so far I do like having the horn engaged I just am not sure how much or little to push. So far I'm really loving this cab. House show tonight and a proper show at a venue tomorrow. I'll post a response after!

Can it really? I've been playing bass for 16 years, but believe it or not I'm just recently (last year) getting into amps and cabs. I don't think I'd ever turn it up full blast, more like 1 o clock. Will I blow the horn if the attenuator on the back of the cab is cranked up, but the master volume on my amp isn't turned up that high?

The house show last night was really fun! This cab sounds great! Obviously playing inside a house I had to really watch my volume and it didn't help that I was put in the corner of the room so I had to control the low end a bit. Being able to get the mids and highs to come out clean without having to work for it was so satisfying and it brought a smile to my face! It took a song to get dialed in a bit since there wasn't a sound check considering how informal of a gig this was.

My last rig was an old Randall bass 215 cab circa 1980's, which a friend of mine let me have since my Gallien Krueger 410 backline got stolen. That Randall had some boom to it, but there are times where my group really plays loud so it just wasn't cutting it.

Tonight is a more professional gig, so I'll post again tomorrow for anyone interested. I know I'm not the best at descriptions, but before I purchased this cab I was scouring the internet for absolutely any tidbit of information I can come across, so if this post helps one person who's on the fence about getting the Ampeg 610 then let me tell you now. This. Cab. ROCKS.

The horn has ligh bulb resistors, so if you push too much the horn the cab literally will light up. If you go to the extreme, those light bulbs will burn before you damage the horn.
