Ampeg 6x10 speakers into a 4x10 cabinet?

I have 6 brand new 10" 6ohm speakers. I was going to replace the speakers in my 6x10. But I want to downsize to a 4x10. I have an Ampeg 4x10 cabinet with no speakers and I would like to use the speakers I was going to put in the 6x10. Can I use 4 of the 6ohm speakers? How would I wire them? I've seen the 4x10 wiring diagram. Just hoping the ohmage won't be a problem.

It hadn't occurred to me that they might really be 6Ω drivers -- I had presumed it was a typo. If they really are 6Ω drivers, they need to be wired in a standard series/parallel arrangement to yield a 6Ω total load: two pairs of paralleled drivers wired in series, or two pairs of series'd drivers wired in parallel. Either way works. I strongly recommend doing the '9-volt battery test' to confirm polarities after you've wired any series-parallel array -- it can be a bit confusing.

Exactly which two cabinets are you talking about? Not all drivers work well (or even mediocre) in all cabinets.

Ampeg did use 6 ohm drivers in some 610's, if used in a 410 wired series-parallel, I would call that new load 4 ohms nominal.
 
Wire it ‘parallel series’ or ‘series parallel’ which means that two of the speakers are wired in parallel, and another two are wired in parallel. Then wire these two together in series with the amp.

so: (6 + 6) / 2
Equals 6 Ohms
So think of it as ‘less than 8, more than 4’ - if your amp can drive 4 Ohms (and anything remotely mainstream and modern will be just fine with 4 Ohm), then it’ll be perfectly happy with 6 Ohms.

Fun project, you’ll have a lovely new cab!!

Either of these (one looks nicer in the pics) (got the pic from a google image search from ‘the gear page’). Personally I prefer parallel series as that makes more sense to me - (I don’t know why!)
