Ampeg 810 with a GK 700RBII?

I have stumbled upon a good deal for a 1996 Ampeg 810. It is pretty beat up, but I need a good cab. I use a Gallien-Krueger 700RB-II head and was wondering if it would be a good match. The cab has one 4 ohm input, and the 700RB-II puts out 450 watts at 4 ohms. If anyone has used this setup before, please let me know.

i've used this exact backline at a club in midtown, and its worked fine for me. plenty loud and big sounding.

Good, I will probably jump on this then, since I am getting such a great deal on it. I can probably update my head for more power to the cab eventually, but it seems like the general consensus is that it should should pretty good. Thanks a bunch. If anyone has any other comments or experience with the setup, please, go right ahead and post them.

heh.... bassmusic1234 must be a metal guy.

because really, unless you are a metal guy, i cannot imagine even considering a 700RB-II as underpowered.

throughout my almost 20 years of playing bass, i have ALWAYS had less power than that (sometimes by a lot :eek: ), and i still do--- my "big" amp is a 380 watt 700RB. hell, ask jimmym how much power his portaflex stack delivers.

whether you love or hate the ampeg 8x10 sound, volume shouldnt ever be an issue.

but as with everything else, i guess YMMV.

It will smoke & be plenty loud enough,I ran an 800RB for years with the ampeg fridge,played some very large venues & that was only 300 watts The 700 !! is 480 into 4 ohms,you will rock & love the tone together

Nah, I ran one with an ashdown mag 300 and it kicked booty. If you have a car to haul it, and no large flights of steps....the 810e is easier to move than any 410 I have owned. Lean and push 170 pounds is better than a 70-110 dead lift any day of the week. The casters, towel bar, and rub rails on the rear make it as simple as it gets.

I really miss mine.......

I was gonna mention that in the process of mixing and matching the various amplifiers and cabs I have sitting around, I was rather pleasantly surprised at the performance of the GK 700 RBi with my 810. Fairly punchy, definitely usable, if a bit underpowered.

But between the 9-year-old OP and the two posts that resurrected this thread, I’m not sure I see the point.

It looks like someone butt-posted, if that’s even possible...:roflmao:

That was me my fault lol I was searching for my new amp head for my ampeg 810 70s version.

That's okay, because it brings up a time in history when some people believed that under-powering a cabinet was a detrimental or unsavory thing. Doesn't seem nearly as commonplace today as it was then.

Well, the only detrimental thing about under-powering is not the actual under-powered amp, but the person trying to wring more sound level than the amp is capable of producing. An under-powered amplifier can still produce dangerous clipping and square waves. But the reasoning of those anti-under-powered folks would have you believe that 40 watts from a 100w amp was more detrimental than 40 watts from a 300w amp. If it's clean, it's good...

And you probably already knew this...:roflmao::roflmao::D:D
