Ampeg 8x10 from the 70's, Good Find?

Hello all, I am new to this forum and this is my first post :hyper:. I am in the process of buying a new bass amp rig and have come across an old Ampeg SVT Classic from the 70's for less than $500. I attached the pictures, and here is the add:

Ampeg SVT classic 8-10 bass cab. 800 to 1600 watt handling power made in america

Trade for multi-track recorder of equal value or some trade & some cash

Also willing to trade for guitar amp or rebuildable 67-79 short bed ford truck no engine or blown engine ok. Just need rolling body.

Or $500 cash or best offer. Or ???? Don't be afraid to make offer.

So I was just wondering if being this old, this cab could still perform and if this was a smart buy. Thanks a lot and also if you know of a CHEAP head that is very powerful and will go well with this amp, please feel free to tell :)

since this guy is clearly lying to you about how old the cab is, i wouldn't doubt there's something else he's not telling you about. perhaps blown speakers, fault wiring, etc.

to answer your question, the only way to tell would be by looking at the serial number. my guess is it isn't much older than 10 years. if everything is working correctly, i'd say 500 is a pretty decent price.

Thanks a lot. What do you think of the brand acoustic (after being reissued i guess)? I found this guy selling a 4x10 and a 600 watt head for $550 in mint condition, willing to meet.

First, welcome to talkbass. Hopefully you'll meet some new friends here and get the answers to lots of questions, but before we all rush in with our opinions of what's s good (or not good) brand, can I ask you a few questions...

- what equipment (bass, amp, etc.) do you have now?
- what type of music do you play?
- Are you in a band, and are you gigging or is this just for home?
- Anything else you can tell us about you & your music that might help us give better suggestions?

Ha ha yeah it is. I didn't even think about that. I have not even been alive long enough (at an age playing bass) to even notice if those were there, i just kinda assumed lol. So what about the acoustic cab and head combo aforementioned?

I have been playing for five years now and after playing an outdoor show with my band last sunday, and not being heard, I decided it was time for a bigger, more powerful amp. Also, I am sick of the sound guys at local places with P.A.'s controlling the bass and turning it down. Basically i want to be heard and sound good. I also blew out a Peavey TKO 80. That was a bad purchase.

I play in a gigging rock band (its modern rock), and I play a schecter c-4 bass that has active pickups and sounds pretty nice. I really like Ampeg stuff but its so damn expensive...I also blew out my last amp. I found a good deal on an Acoustic 600 head and 410 cab that I am considering. I also want to add a 1x15 to that setup in the future.

I'd say if the Ampeg functions properly, jump on it. Consider it a lasting, quality investment. It's tried and true and you can't go wrong with it.

it all depends on how much money you have. What was your old amp that wasn't cutting it? an 8x10 ampeg is HUGE, HEAVY as hell, and pretty ridiculously overboard if your playing the amphitheater on sundays. I would suggest something light and powerful. If you got some money ($500?) Epifani cabnets are super light and the best i've ever heard. You could probably kill with a 3x10...

Did it say in the ad it was a 70s cab? Unless I missed it or you didn't copy that part I didn't see a mention of age. The 800 to 1600 watt rating means it's a newer model which most people say lack the definition of late 90s and earlier cabs. other wise 500 is a fair price for a newer cab.
