Ampeg B-100r Rocket Aficionados

I've been playing a ric with flats into mine lately.

So a b100r came up on Craigslist - original owner, great overall condition, priced right. I read all the TB comments on this amp and it's mine now!

Took it home and played all my basses through it - what an amazing-sounding combo amp! Really has a punchy, vintage vibe. I also happen to have a PF800 and two PF115he that I gig with regularly. I A/B'd them and can get a similar sound, which is great for me. I can use the b100r at smaller gigs and practice. I have some time this weekend and think I will run the line out of either the PF800 or the b100r and see how massive a 'wall of Ampeg tone' I can get!
Jaycephas, you've got exactly the same rig that I have! A B-100R, and a PF800. Except I only have one cab, the Ampeg PF-115HE. Like you, I'm just in awe of the awesomeness of the tone, but also of the similarity of tone between the two amps. The only thing I plan to add is a PF-115LF, in the bottom position.

By the way, So far I really like the onboard compressor on the PF800.

I agree that the onboard compressor does a good job. However, I have a Diamond BCP-1 and an Aguilar TLC that are my 'go to' compressors and work with my respective basses. As far as the cabs, I might suggest that you get another 115HE - the sealed cabs work well together, and I get plenty of bottom end when playing my 5-string basses.

Another 115HE? I hadn't considered that possibility. I have to admit it makes sense. I was thinking a ported and a sealed ran together would be "ultimate". But maybe two of the same exact cab would pull the maximum from my PF800.

The line out on the b100r is really noisy. So I grabbed my SABDDI and used the parallel out to run the signal between both the combo and the PF800/115he (2) stack. Just awesome tone with both amps on. It really is a wall of Ampeg goodness.

Here again...

I have been testing this and that lately and always come back to the B-100R. Peggy (AM has dropped of the logo ;-) ) is my third B-100R and I have a feeling it's here to stay. The others were good also but no match to this one. Don't know why it sounds a tad better than the others I' tried but it does :bassist:

Good question. This was actually discussed on some other B-100R thread about a year or so ago. People on the know attributed the difference to possible variation of the specs of the parts used in the head resulting in a match made in heaven. Of course the speaker and cabinet play a part too. It is probably just that the stars were aligned properly when PEGgy came to life on the assembly line of SLM.

The tonal difference is also the sum of many traits: this B-100R sounds warmer, softer, more even and somehow faster than the others I've had. The difference is subtle though so it's not like contrasting a tube power amp with a solid state though the quality of the difference is precisely that.

Below is my other set which I used as a benchmark on this post to describe the difference of said B-100R (PEGgy) to the other B-100R's I've heard. If I had to choose in between the PEG or the Hartke/Trace/Aguilar-set the latter would to go.

Maybe a previous owner replaced Peggy's speaker with a different model...
Have you popped a port tube out to take a look at the back of the speaker yet?

PS:
I own a pair of B100R's, and prefer the tone of the one I've installed a 4-ohm EVM 15L speaker in.

Hi guys, i'm about to buy myself a used B200R that i found at a local dealer, but at the same time a B100R Full made in USA just poped up on CS near where i live. So for all those who own both, what do you guys think ? B200R made in china vs B100R made in USA ? is the pre amp tube on the 200 a thing ? knowing that I'll use it for rehearsal and smal to medium gigs !

100.
The 200 has been bugged with constructional probs (use the search, Luke). The 100 has everything you need, and the lack of a tube means nothing in this case as the amp in the 100 truly excels way beyond its wattage and price point. IMHO.

I'd get the USA B100r. I've had two of the China B200r, and now own a USA B100r. The B200r... I was never able to solve the vibration issue. The B100r is just plain solid and is a keeper.

Thank you very much for your anwers guys ! I tried the B200R at the shop the other day but this one isn't buzzin at all i think the previous owner fix the buzzin issues by screwing a metal rod at the back of the chassis (I'll take a picture for you). So knowing that, would you guys still be keen for the B100 ? (Sorry for bad english evrybody !) oh and i was wandering, would you recommend a b100 from USA over a b100 from China ?

Be sure you test notes up on the neck. Like 7-14 frets on E and A strings. I don't recall exactly, but there were some note frequencies that would cause the chassis buzzing in my case. I'm interested in seeing this fix you mention. I'd still go with the B100r, but I'm soured by my B200r experience.

Yeah that's what i first looked at, i tried and shred the bottom frets like crazy at high volums (knob on 9) and this thing was just rock solid not buzzing in anyway on any frets. The previous owner screwed something kind of like this (but again i'll post a photo). So knowing that this problem looks pretty much solved do you think that tonewise the 100USA is better than the 200 from China ?

They both sound very similar and both sound great. I used both models in a practice location. In my case, both have/had enough power. The B200r did have a stronger punch, but the vibration issue was preventing me from enjoying it. The B100r is just more classic, easier to deal with (chassis/amp structure is different as you may have noticed) and I think a better investment in the long run. If the B200r has been fixed and suits your needs, then go with what you like and what suits you best.
