Ampeg B-15N: best replacement speaker today

Thanks. Speaker seems to work alright. Do you think there might be something wrong in the speaker? What might cause a speaker to play overall just fine but just be a bit bright?

Yes it could be the speaker. 2 possibilities are either the voice coil is swelled enough to keep the cone from flexing in and out like it should or the outer foam or paper edge has stiffened with age. A re-cone would be in order with either issue. Tone issues can also be a sign of failed capacitors in the tone circuit. If the amp has never been serviced, the original capacitors are long over due for replacement.

Thats the interesting thing. Both techs said the original caps were reading fine so they left them in there.

I'm really curious to hear this amp. Any way you can post a recording? Even if it's just a cell phone recording, I'd really like to hear it. Those of us familiar with the sound of them could give you a better idea of whether it's a problem with the amp or not.

Thanks for the offer. I'll see if I can get one up today.

Not on mine. That setting on mine gets it closest to the Jamerson thing. This is why I had the thing checked out twice by two different techs to see what the heck is going on.
You could run some experiments connecting your B-15 head & cab to other heads & cabs to discover whats going on... You could build or buy 1/4" adapters from fliptops if your B-15 still has the 4-pin speaker plugs.

Ok here are a couple of short clips (hope I did this correctly) the original video files on my phone actually sounded pretty ok through the phone speaker. It was brighter in person.

Use the "Upload a file" button on here.
Lol. I tried that. 42BF8E1A-D7F5-4AED-986B-7708A151D29C.png And these are my options so I click photo library because that’s where my videos are but only photos show up, no videos are available? But they are if I go directly to my photos?

Ok. Apparently the videos won’t load. Any advice on how to get it from my phone to this thread?

Only problem with your google drive link Is: It's currently set to "Restricted" mode.

You simply need to change the settings on that songs (Get link window) to "Anyone on the internet with this link can view", instead of Restricted. You'll find that setting by clicking on the little downward facing arrow next to the "Restricted" word.

Yes, thanks I'm going to try a different method.

Let's try this again.

The funny thing is that in the recording it sounds better (warmer) than it does in the room. Maybe the magic of the B15N was how it recorded rather than the live, in room sound? Lol. Now I feel like a fool complaining about nothing but I'd still like to hear your thoughts.

Weird but these videos only seem to work if you click on the expand button on the top right corner of the video icon

Nice playing! It all sounds perfectly fine to me. But you said you're using a Fender 62 Original on your Precision, and THAT is why it sounds so bright to you. I had one in my Precision for a year before I replaced it with a Geezer, and it's a very bright pickup. It's not a bad pickup, but it's very bright and a little mid-deficient for my tastes. The Geezer is less bright but still has some. The Duncan SPB-1 is another pickup in that vein with slightly less upper mid content than the Geezer. But if you really want to put a darker pickup in it, the DiMarzio Model P is very hot but considerably less bright.

Thanks for the feedback Jimmy! I appreciate your thought on the pickups as well. I waiver with the Original '62's. In low volume I can really get them going and I love them. I also like the way I can get them to sound with a pick. Other times I curse them. Lol. I've tried Nordy NP4V's and they were good but I found the Original '62's just sounded more like a fender. Maybe the Geezers are worth a shot.

Well I'm not saying that the Geezers will be the perfect pickup for you...I'm just saying they're the perfect pickup for me :D
