That was it... replaced and everything is running fine! Still planning to try the 6550s, but it sounds great with 6L6s right now. Thanks for all the help!
Interesting - got mine in and no prob getting the tubes back in except the unobtainium 7199 . I need to take a picture of it anyways - ugliest most misshapen tube ever. At least I assume it's the 7199 though a process of elimination - no markings that I can see on it. The 12ax7 sockets are ceramic - replacements?
Yah, if this tube doesn't work I'll do that - but I guess I'm going to have to pull the chassis to figure out why the tube won't go in .
Here's the misshapen bastard:
Resurrecting to check with you all about the wiring for the 8/16 Ohm switch mentioned in this thread. I have a (non-grounding) ON/ON switch in the spare speaker hole with the yellow 8 Ohm tap on one pole and the green 16 Ohm tap along with the NFB wire on the other. Sound right? Also, I assume I don't need to float the jack from the chassis with the old rubber shoulder washers as the jack sleeve and ground go straight to the star grounding on the can cap. Image attached. Thank you!
