Ampeg BA108 and BA110

G'day All,

First post on forum and just seeking some assistance wrt my sons' BA-108. He was playing away and noticed the power LED flickering. He turned the amp off while he went outside for a while then later in the afternoon he turned it back on but no power evident.

I appreciate a power fuse or relay may have died, but does anyone know of a "reset" as such, if one exists, before I take the amp back to the dealer (it is under warranty so no dramas there).

Bought the Chinese made Ampeg BA 108, cause I been using an American made B2 for quite a while and the 108 does the job for now! On the 30th day of ownership, at 5 vol, the speaker decided to make this awful sound at F# tone on E string.

I am using a Fender Aerodyne, which does produce some high end noise, due to passive pickups, and if I am not touching strings and or where I am standing relative to whatever....amp, electricty. (Added this just as FYI, not related to BA108)!

Took Amp back to GC and they played it softly, so I cranked to 5 and told him to play
F#. They replaced Amp, based on speaker noise at low freq and told me the is not made to play at high volume. HMMM....Well, they did say it makes great practice AMP, so I will just always stop at five and go ahead white out the rest of the numbers.....not! I was able to get the AMP replaced because within 30 days of purchase, but if it happens again, then it has to go back to AMPEG to replace speaker (110 and 108 both have 2 YR Warranty, just on speaker).

If after 1 return to Ampeg and still problem, first I will replace with at least tougher 50 WATT Speaker and add an 11 to volume, cause to not be able to use the thing past 5 out of the box, is thoroughly stupid. If I splinter the wood, oh well, then I probably will get the 112 and be done with it. Aside from all that, at 100 bucks, it's not bad for features and portability. The fact that it was Ampeg sold me on their sound, and reliability, which was disappointing as far as speaker!

Assuming that you get a tougher speaker (I was considering the Eminence Alpha 8a at one time...still might), it's still only a 25w amp and it's going to start breaking up past 5 anyway. Why? First off, traditionally made solid state and tube amps have at least twice as much as their RMS wattage available as peak power, which is distorted. Second, a lot of folks like the distortion they get from Ampegs, and that's how you get it with the BA108.

Ignore the knob positions. They are meaningless. Just because it goes up to 10 doesn't mean it's going to sound good when you do, and that goes for pretty much any amp on the market.

After reading most of the post in this thread, I see people have problem with this amp about distort sound etc for this little guy.

I've bought this Ampeg BA108 yesterday in the shop after comparing with vox pathfinder, peavey 158, roland 20xl and orange 25BX. I went for this ampeg because the tone is so Ampeg and it sound better then the other practice combo i mention before as well.

This Ampeg BA108 is much much louder then i expect which leads me to think i can actually use it more then a practice amp at home, i.e band rehearsal and small pub gigs etc. Also this BA108 handle the low end much much better then other similar practice combo i mention, i play very hot active bass and it handle that as well without distort or clipping the amp.

At setting 3 on this amp it is very loud already, i can't see myself pushing more then 4 or 5 on this little guy ......... pushing more then half of the volume on this amp is getting too crazy.

At the end of the day is a 25watt practice combo, it does what i want it to do and i get more then i expect already, so i can't complain. Is a £100 amp at the end of the day so is value for money.

Love this little amp now :)

Picked up a used BA 112 a couple months ago....very impressed with this little amp, great tone. I use it mainly for practicing and small jams with my drummer buddy. I had an Ampeg B-100R before that, great amp but it had some sort of electrical issue that caused it to cut out randomly...sold it for $300 as is and bought the BA112 for half that...and I think I like it even better.

I'm a complete amp newb. I've been borrowing a friends "real" bass amp for the last three years. I know nothing about it. It's big. It sounds good.

Unfortunately, his gigging amp just crapped out on him so he needs the amp back.

I don't know about amps. I don't want to know. If I start learning, it'll just get me spending money when I can always borrow my friends stuff if I need it. (I'm not a working musician, he is).

Strictly for home use, is the 108 good enough? Is the 110 for $80 more worth getting? I've played them both at Sam Ash and aside from the ability to crank the 110 louder, I couldn't notice much of a difference.

Another question. I was planning on getting it from Sam Ash but it seems they only have the floor model. Should I shop elsewhere and try to get a fresh one still in the box? or are floor models OK?

I know a bass that's been on the sales floor being abused by slap-happy teenagers isn't always in the best shape. Does the same hold true for floor model amps?

Just brought the 108 home. I don't know what makes a good amp good, but this thing sounds great. Clear and smooth and plenty loud. The controls do what they're supposed to. It's a quarter the size of my buddies amp but sounds just as good. Sam Ash did have a new one in the box and they honored musiciansdriend current 10% off coupon. Good stuff.

I think the Ba-108 is a good practice amp. I've owned a Peavy TKO 65, Trace Boxer 30 and a Line 6 Lowdown studio 110. I think the Lil' Ampeg is better than those mentioned above....and for $99...a great practice amp. If you haven't tried it with headphones and the iPod/MP3 input, you are missing the beauty of this combo. Driving it to compete with a drum kit is not what it was designed for...I normally keep the volume set around 3 with a passive bass.

My first post, sorry it's not very positive. I just bought BA108 but I had to return it. There was audible hum all the time and annoying buzz when volume was about 2-3. As you can read above, I'm not the only one with similar problems. Can't recommend BA108 to anyone. Very low quality, too cheap I guess. Looking for EBS Classic 60 instead.
